NIS 2009 - access thread data

Hey guys,  I seem to have a major issue with Norton and my laptop.

Problem: My laptop can no longer connect to the internet and Norton is telling me that my virus definitions are corrupted so that any scan I try to run on my system to discover the problem gets aborted.  Because the internet isn't available I can't download the latest updates so I'm stuck in no-man's land at the moment.

When I checked the recent history in Norton I came across the following entry:

Medium: unauthorised access logged

actor: c:\window\system32\services.exe

actor PID: 740

target: c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.5.0.135\ccSvcHst.exe

target PID: 2148

action: access thread data

Reaction: unauthorised access logged

This may or may not be the cause, I'm really not sure but before this entry on the log my internet connection was working fine as was Norton.

I'm pretty much a total noob when it comes to computers so if anybody could explain what's gone on and how to fix it I would be eternally grateful.
