Can you open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton Installer\Logs? There you can see an URL.txt file. Open the text file, you can see an error string starting with http://errors.norton.com/?module= .Paste the entire string here. Also did you receive any error codes before you receive the collecting error logs or gathering information message?

I had a similar experience, but only because I was trying to install both NSW 2008PE and NIS 2009.  Once I gave up on NSW 2008PE I didn't have any more problem.

I am going to make a drastic suggestion:

1.  Run the Norton Removal Tool again, then reboot.

2.  Open My Computer - go to Tools>Folder Options

3.  Click on View

4.  CHECK Show hidden files and folders

5.  UNCHECK Hide protected operating system files [NOTE:  You will get a warning - ignore it]

6.  Click on Okay

7.  Press Control-F to start a search

    a.  The search should be for the words "Norton, Symantec"

    b.  The search should be through your entire root directory (usually the C: directory)

    c.  You should elect advanced options and make sure you search subdirectories and look for hidden and system files.

8.  Any folders with the words Norton or Symantec in the title should be deleted (you can restore them if necessary from the recycle bin)

9.  Reboot

10.  READ THIS CAREFULLY:  Any folders in DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS that contain Norton or Symantec items should be deleted IF IT APPEARS THAT THOSE ARE THE ONLY FILES OF THAT KIND IN THE FOLDER.

11.  Install NIS 2009.

12.  If everything works fine, great.  If not, undelete all those files.

13.  Restore the View settings you changed in steps 4 and 5

Explanation:  the problems I have had with Norton in the past have always been related to artifacts left after product removal.  (Btw, McAfee was even worse.)  Norton Removal Tool combined with a full product uninstall should really clear out everything (imho) related to Norton products.  Out of kindness, it tries not to take certain database information (such as Identity Protect data and product key) so that a new install would essentially start you from where the previous installation stopped.

Unfortunately, some of the data left behind might actually interfere with an installation.

If you don't mind re-entered a product key and recreating your password set-up for Identity Protect, then this might be the solution to your problem.

You also might wait about a day and see if anyone else has anything less dramatic to suggest.

Good luck,

faiyaz, hi

Have you tried any of these things yet?  How are things working at this point?
