I got both MS updates on my two XP computers and one Vista computer here at home.  No problems on any of them.

Strange.  I never had a problem with windows updates before.  Maybe it was just a little gremlim in my system. :smileytongue:

What updates were they?

Hi Dieselman743

have a look here : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-oct.mspx

I'm running NIS2009 on XP SP3 and after reading your messages also applied the Black Tuesday Updates from Microsoft.

I am almost certain that my NIS2009 System Tray Icon was gone when WUD asked me to Restart but it has come back and everything seems normal. I ran NIS2009 LiveUpdate after the Updates and it downloaded a set of Pulsed updates OK.

FWIW

AAAAAAAhh one of the reasons I have Windows Update service shut off.

I received the updates today through Windows Automatic Updates and experienced no problems.

Sorry to hear about your gremlin, Golfjunky.

AAAAAAAhh one of the reasons I have Windows Update service shut off.

Excuse me, Diesel, but wouldn’t that be one of the reasons to have it turned on?  It was the updates that fixed the problem, not cause them.

The same exact problem has happened to me since the windows updates, Norton Internet Security 2009 tray icon won't load and my Secure/Norton Gadget never stops loading in Vista SP1.  I have to boot up in safe mode with networking in order to be able to finally connect.

Uninstalled 2009 and then reinstalled and all worked until the next reboot, then same problem, seems like Norton just freezes at the load up.

I manually update my Windows. I had all the recent updates till these ones came out. I went to the Windows Update site and downloaded and installed the latest updates. It killed my NIS 2009. Had to completely uninstall NIS 2009 then use the NRT. Rebooted. Cleaned the registry. Reinstalled NIS 2009. Back to normal again.

Thanks but I am hopeful that Norton will come out with a patch.  I reinstalled again and now it takes about 6 minutes for the Norton 2009 ICON to show up and for the program to stop loading.

Did you uninstall Norton then Reboot. Did you run thr NRT afterwards?

No, must admit I didnt, just did the uninstall and then downloaded and reinstalled again.  Do you think the tool would make the difference?

Yes of course. Do all the steps I did. The NRT tool removes all left over traces.

Ok thanks, I will try it later today.

I was dreading Patch Tuesday, but everything went smoothly. One of the reasons I decided to try NIS 2009 was that my previous Panda AV/Firewall, ended up fried after a couple of bad Windows Update sessions.

Without going into the gory details I'll just say that I normally avoid Customer Service/Tech Support at all costs if it's at all possible, but these two experiences required detailed instructions from Panda tech support in the first instance, and almost 2 and a half hours on the phone with Microsoft WU support in the second, to rectify. After those two incidents I found that anything from WU that went any deeper into the system than a Windows Defender update would more or less render Panda unusable without a at least one, and sometimes more, uninstals/reinstalls. I finally gave up and started trying new AV programs.

All of that to say, I feel your pain. I hope everyone's issues are addressed soon.

Is there a way to completely disable NIS 2009 before applying Windows Updates?

I am now convinced it is not a Norton Internet Security 2009 issue.  I have used the removal tool to remove the program and on re-boot I am still getting a 6 minute time frame before I am able to open any programs (that's 6 minutes from my Windows Log-on and the appearance of the desktop before I can open any program).  So I am thinking that something in that recent Windows update did something to my Vista SP1 laptop.

I have run Malaware, Spybot, etc so I don't think it's a malware issue.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions however.

Hi :smileyhappy:

I Also Had A Big Batch Of 11 Important and Recommended Windows Updates Yesterday.

However...

I did Not have the terrible problems with NIS 09 that some other people seem to have had.

The Only Problem I Had After The Windows Updates...

When My Laptop Restarted... The little computer icon in the Taskbar - Had a red X instead of a Globe

Obviously!

I presumed this meant I had - No Internet :smileysad:

However!

When I went to the - Network And Sharing Centre ... To  reconnect by clicking the X ... There Was No X

I Was Connected To The Internet! :smileysurprised:

Completely Confused!

I put my mouse over the little computer icon in the Taskbar ( Still Showing A Red Cross ) ...

And Sure Enough... It Said - Local & Internet

I Shutdown The Laptop

Waited 2 minutes

Started The Laptop Up Again

Back To Normal! :smileyvery-happy:

I just presumed the little computer icon in the Taskbar... Had got a  bit confused!

Re : The people that experienced problems with NIS 09 after the Windows Updates...

Perhaps NIS 09 just happened to be in the middle of something important...

When their computers were Restarted for the Windows Updates :smileysad:

e.g.

Maybe NIS 09 was - Updating

OR

Doing a - Quick Scan

To... Symantec Staff

This is why we need an - Animated NIS 09 Taskbar Icon :smileywink:

If people could easily see when NIS 09 is Updating or Scanning...

They would know to -  WAIT - Before doing other important things ... Like - Updating Windows

There is no animation and even if Norton  was updating that doesnt screw up anything cause the update will come back upon reboot. Updates and scans happen all the in the back round. If that had anything to do with it then every person in the world that was using NIS 2009 and shut down there pc would be having issues. Windows itself is always doing things in the backround. If that was the case then dont you think Windows would get screwed up by restarting or shiutting down. No thats not the case.
