NIS 2009 will not start -- error message -- "... uistub.exe .... path cannot be found"

Thanks for responding Phil,

I have installed from a new CD and ran the LiveUpdate until no more we available.  I am running I believe, the latest version 16.2.0.7.

As with others who have posted I too can not run it from the normal "START/Programs/Nortion Internet Security/Norton Internet Security" or even going direct to the exicutable: "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7.\uistub.exe" without getting "path cannot be found".   I cannot recreate the shortcuts witout getting the same error.

Otehrwise it seems to be working normally.  I just have to open it through the systray.  I just don't think I should leave it like this.

Thanks huwyngr,

Yes, I removed every instance I found in the registry, add/remove programs as well as a window search for key words Symantec and Norton.  And of course several reboots before re-installing.

I'm missing something but can't find it.

Hi gjay,

Do me a favor and check the target for the desktop icon or the Start > All Programs > NIS.

Thanks.

Phil_D,

Desktop shortcut:

"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uiStub.exe"

Start Programs:

"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uiStub.exe"

Something else I observed is in the task manager on ever attempt to run from one of the shortcust it creates and instatnce of "uistub.exe".

As I'm sure you know, those targets are the correct ones - thanks for checking anyway.

The Task Manager issue is strange, I don't get that entry. I even checked with Process Explorer. I'm guessing you don't get that instance when opening from the systray.

Maybe that will be the key to solving this.

Thanks Phil_D,

I appreciate your information.  I wont give up but I don't wish to re-image my laptop.  I will keep checking back, in case someone finds a cause or solution.  And I will post the issue and  my solution WHEN I find it.

I note the confidence in your statement - Good Stuff!

Your mention of the instance in task manager has me thinking about this from a different angle - perhaps others will also.

Thanks for compliment Phil_D,

I do use the compare apples to apples method.

Additional info:

I checked one of my WORKING machines and even after I start NIS09 from one of the shortcuts I DON"T see a "uistub.exe".  Is not the normal name "ccSvcHst.exe"?

I did try double clicking ccSvcHst.exe from "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7" and got the same error as well as now I have multiple instances of "ccSvcHst.exe" in the task manager.  Only way to remove them is by a reboot.

GJay

You should have two instances of ccSvcHst.exe in Task Manager.

One listed as "System" and another one listed as the current user.

Post moved out to a new thread for a better exposure.

Hello gjay,

I would like to suggest a different approach to this.

You have been installing from a CD which may have the prior version and then your installed NIS 2009 is getting the new build to 16.2.0.7 through the live update process. Perhaps something is happening during the update to 16.2.0.7.

Please run the Norton Removal Tool here at least twice with a restart in between and be sure all Symantec / Norton entries have been removed from your computer.

Download and SAVE NIS 2009 here which is the complete 16.2.0.7 version. Install NIS 2009 from this downloaded package. Once installed, please run a manual Live Update to get all the current definitions.

Let us know how you do.

Hey Phil_D,

I will give this a try today and post a follow-up. I think I tried running NIS09 straight after the install without running LiveUpdate.  I've tried so many things I'm starting to loose details.  I think the version was 16.1.0.25...

I have downloaded both of your links and will do as you suggested.  One question, you said "run a manual LiveUpdate" do you mean launching it from with-in NIS09 application?  Or is there some place on Symantec's site I should try to run it?

FWIW I jsut checked my desktop icon path and it is:

"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uiStub.exe"

and it works .....

Note the double \Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\ in the path.

Have you looked in Windows Explorer or whatever file manager you use and traced the path to see if the one you have actually leads to the uiStub file?

See my just now post on the difference in the path between your shortcut and mine …

Now the plot thickens.

I have double checked and my path is a single reference to Norton Internet Security.

However, it would be a quick edit to the target adding the second Norton Internet Security to see if that works.

Phil_d and huwyngr,

And even thicker plot....

I did notice on one of my attempts to reinstall without first removing the previous NIS09 install, that it did create this double layer of \Norton Internet Security\ folders.  What I found was two sets of program files. They both had the BRANDING, ENGINE, MUI AND ISOLATE.INI folder and ini file.  However the first also include the second \Norton Internet Security\ along with the duplicat to which the new shortcut was pointing. (hope this makes sense)

Once I saw this I decided it was time to perform a Windows System Restore. Ran NRT several times, deleted any folders and registry enteries and re-install from the CD and ran LiveUpdate until no more updates were available.

This is the current state.

gjay

And with the current status, do you still have the problem with opening from the desktop icon?

Phil_D,

The "current status" was still broken shortcuts.

I am now in the midst of your suggested process you proveded this morning 2-11-09 6:54 am.

I'll post details shortly.  One question still remains..that "run a manual LiveUpdate"..was that from within NIS09 or Symantec's site?

And thanks again for sticking it out with me.

GJay

Run the manual Live Update from within the Norton 2009 Interface.

Standing by.....

Results from Phil_d suggestions,

Steps:

  1. Downloaded to desktop

  •
    •
      • nis09en.exe
      • Norton_Removal_tool.exe

  1. ran “Norton_Removal_tool.exe” from step 1

  2. restarted per NRT request

  3. ran NRT again

  4. restarted no request from NRT this time

  5. Deleted any Norton or Symantec files from C:

  6. Backed up registry

  7. Deleted registry entries referencing Norton or Symantec

  8. restarted

  9. Ran “nis09en.exe” from step 1

  10. Double click on NIS09 desktop shortcut

  11. *arg – same error “C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\uistub.exe” “The specified path does not exist.”  “Check the path, and then try again.”

  12. Opened NIS from systray icon

  13. ran LiveUpdate from within NIS

  •
    •
      • Downloaded/installed 14.85 MB of update

15.  ran LiveUpdate again

  •
    •
      • No Updates found

Looks like I’m back to square one…only systray icon will allow me to open NIS09.
