NIS 2009 won't open

NIS 2009 has been working since last November on two computers, a desktop and a laptop.  A week or two ago, it failed to start (after awakening from hibernation, I think) on the desktop, but a couple reboots fixed that.  This morning the problem recurred on the desktop (even after many reboots), while the laptop continues to work normally.

Desktop: Dell 8200 | XP Home SP-3 | NIS 2009 16.7.2.11 (probably) | IE8

Laptop: IBM 2373-2AU | XP Pro SP-3 | NIS 2009 16.7.2.11 | IE8

I have tried starting NIS 2009 from an icon on the desktop which points to

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\engine\17.7.2.10\uiStub.exe

and from one on my Office Shortcut Toolbar that points to

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\engine\16.5.0.134\uiStub.exe.

In explorer I find BOTH ...\engine\17.7.2.10\uiStub.exe AND ...\engine\17.7.2.11\uiStub.exe.  Clicking on either icon or on the 17.7.2.11\uiStub.exe in explorer gives no result, except sometimes I eventually get a One-Click box either telling me NIS 2009 failed to open or assuming I am a beta tester and offering me the option of uploading my log files.

Task Manager confirms that there are no copies of ccSvcHst running on the desktop.

I currently have the desktop disconnected from the internet and I transfer files to/from the laptop via USB memory chip.

After reviewing a few previous threads on this WONDERFUL forum, I downloaded and ran SysProt and Malwarebytes and am attaching the log files.

I have not removed any of the 24 infections found by Malwarebytes.  Incidentally, the laptop shows only the last two Notify Disabled items in its mbam log.

I also tried downloading and running RootRepeal.exe.  It said it was initializing and then the box got erased as I closed some windows.  Task Manager shows it's been using 95% or so of the CPU for 1:13:00.  Does it take a long time to run, or should I abort that?

IE reports that MyNortonAccount.com is a broken link, but I have downloaded both NIS09EN.exe and NIS10UPEN.exe.  If I must uninstall and reinstall, I'd prefer to stay with 2009 for a month or two, just so I don't have a very short window before I must upgrade or renew in a year.  But I'm open to suggestions.

So, what now?

Hi

I need some help

When I turned my PC on today I tried to run a system scan. When I tried to open NIS09 from the system tray I was only able to see a small grey window. When I try to double click the icon or try to open it from the start menu I get a larger grey window in the middle of the desktop.

Everything has been working fine up until this happened this afternoon

I am using Vista Ultimate x64

Any help would be great

Thanks

Iain

Hi md

Cheers for getting back to me.

How can i disable Norton auto-protect? I am unable to open the program? Can i do it throw Task Manager?

Thanks

Iain

When I try to open SysProt it tells me it needs Admin Privileges. When I run as Admin it still doesn't work.

Any ideas

If you right click on the SysProt icon and go to properties, is there a button at the bottom that says unblock?  If so click that and apply.

Allowed Malwarebytes to delete all 24 items.

After hibernate/awaken, NIS 2009 started normally using 2.11 version.

Re-scanned with Malwarebytes -- found no problems.

Although NIS 2009 seemed to be working fine, you noticed it seemed to have install over install over install, so:

Ran Norton Removal Tool followed by reboots twice.

Ran NIS09EN.exe.  Installed OK without asking for product key

Ran Live Update.

All is well and I thank you very much for your time and thougtful responses to this query and the others I consulted.

BTW - I chose not to upgrade to NIS 2010 because I wasn't clear on the terms of the license -- how long the subscription would be -- and it looks from the posts like there may be a few teething problems for a while.
