Note: I see a McAfee scan service in your log as well as Norton
Running 2 AV's will cause conflicts.
It appears there is only one McAfee component running - you may need to remove the McAfee programs thru add/remove as well as the McAfee removal tool as well.
EDIT TO ADD: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 REMOVAL TOOL LINK
From HJT LOG: C:\Program Files\McAfee Security Scan\2.0.181\SSScheduler.exe
Hello csgreeley
I'm not an expert at reading HiJackThis logs, but I can see a few McAfee files in there. As has already been suggested, I would definitely run the McAfee removal tool 2 times with a reboot after each run. I would then also uninstall your Norton product and then do a clean install of NIS 2010. There is bound to be conflicts with the McAfee files that are still in your computer.
I would use the Norton Removal Tool also with 2 runs of it.
You can download the Norton Removal tool from
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&selected_nav=partner
Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.
Then please reinstall your NIS 2010 and have your key handy.
You can download 2010 NIS from here
http://www.norton.com/nis10
Please remember to run live update after install to make sure all updates are received and then please reboot. Since the newest version of NIS 2010 is just coming out now on a phased in manner, you may not get the 17.7 patch yet like you had in your HiJackThis log.until later.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks
Thanks for all the great advice. I will do these things and report back.
Chris
Did it all. Attached is the newest Hijackthis Log. I'll let you know about freezing.
Chris
Sadly no luck. It still freezes only when it does a full scan or "background task".
Any advice.
Chris
From your last HJT log posted I see Windows Defender running
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide
That may also be the source of the conflict
A succesful install of NIS will disable Windows Defendeer.

Thanks Amy.
Windows tells me that Defender is disabled. I cannot figure out how to uninstall it. If it is disabled, could it still cause a conflict?
Chris
Did you reinstall NIS after running the MacAfee and Norton removal tools?
Hello csgreeley
Here are instructions on how to disable Windows defender in Vista
http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=8279
Hope this helps you to disable it and to make sure that it is disabled.
it is disabled but still I encounter problems. I have to disable a full system scan for NIS10 and weekly scan with malwarebytes.
Thanks,
Chris
Hello csgreeley
Have you defragged your system lately?
ran sfc /scannow and found four unrepairable items:
dfrgfat.exe
printfilterpipelineproxy.dll
settings.ini
syshiper.exe
Does this not indicate a problem with your hard drive? Perhaps this problem is what is causing the freezes in your scans.
