NIS 2010 Freezes during Full System Scan

I downloaded Norton Internet Security 2010 (for vista) a few weeks ago, and every time i try to run a full system scan, it freezes about 10 minutes into it. I can’t even do a ctrl+alt+del to get out of it, I have to hold down the button and completely shut my laptop down. Is there a fix to this? I never had this problem with NIS 2009.

After reading your post I ran it in safe mode, and it did the same thing. So I went back to normal mode and ran it to see exactly where it hangs, and it got as far as scanning 620,488 files, and froze when it hit:

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft_window....\iasdatastore.dll

I couldn't even move my mouse, I just had to hold down the button and restart.

Hello trenelly

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for NIS 2010? You can find the minimum system requirements for NIS 2010 here.

http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security

Do you have any other real time security programs installed now which might be conflicting?

How did you install NIS 2010 and what was the version that you have installed?

My system meets the requirements.

I have no other real time security software

I installed from a download from symantec

The version was 17.5.0.127  I subsequently received several updates to the system before running the full system scan.

Try to update virus definitions using the Intelligent Updater and then run a scan in Safe mode. You can download and run Intelligent Updater from the following link:

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response /definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95

You have to download the appropriate exe file for your Norton program according to it's version and run it. After that, boot your computer to safe mode and run the scan:

1. As soon as the computer starts, tap the F8 key about once per second until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu.

2. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.

3. Click Yes to proceed to Safe mode.

4. Double-click the Norton icon to start full system scan.

5. Check whether the scan completes, fix the threats detected and restart the computer.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Yogesh, I  have tried all you suggested but no joy.  I've managed to trace the source of the crash - if I open the "Norton Tasks" window  then manually start the "insight update" then the system will crash.  However, I also had a crash while watching a movie - perhaps that was just the insight update running under it's normal schedule.  I'm now back on NIS2009.

Hi trenelly,

Welcome to the community

Do you see the same problem with NIS 09 as well.

Thanks,

No, TomV.  NIS 2009 has always been stable on my system.

Hi trenelly:

Some systems are more sensitive to the antivirus engine updates installing over top of older ones.  You could try cleaning off the 2009 version using the removal tool, and then installing the latest version, which is 17.6.0.32.  With a clean install, you may get the same stability you have had on 2009.

If you want to try that the removal tool is here.

A link to the new version is here.

The removal tool is non-selective, so if you have other Norton products on board, it will take them as well.

I am also having this problem (Vista SP2, Sony Vaio, 3GB RAM).  I can do a full scan with Malwarebytes without any problems.  If I run a full scan with NIS2010 it will freeze the whole system.  I have done a full re-install (twice) without any success.  What guidance do you have for me.

Quick scans are fine.  I have had to disable a full scan otherwise the machine will freeze if it starts to do an idle time scan.

BTW: 17.6.0.32

Thanks,

Chris

Hello csgreeley

Are you able to do a custom scan of one drive like c drive without it freezin up? Do you have any other live time security programs running or installed? What was your previous security program and how was that removed?

i've had to uninstall again.  I try and do a full scan, I get to >300K items scanned and then the HD light blinks at 1/sec and the laptop freezes.  It did not have any other AV software (it needs one now).  I have done a HD scan and have identified any errors.  The NIS works fine otherwise and the quick scan is flawless.  I cannot do any full scans without it freezing.

Chris

Actually, when it freezes, Norton shows a "background tasks" pop-up.  Otherwise it works fine.  The only other real-time program is Spybot.  Could that be causing a conflict?  It works fine on my desktop.

Hi csgreeley

You should not be running 2 real-time AV products as you can get conflicts. I suggest you uninstall Spybot and then see what is happening with the freeze.

Hello csgreeley

If you have Spybot installed with TeaTimer on, that will definitely cause a problem. TeaTimer prevents any changes made to your computer and probably stops anything from coming close to it just as your Norton product does. TeaTimer also prevents any changes that need to be made to your registry to clean up malware.. You should not be running more than 1 real time security product as they will and do conflict.

If you want to use another on demand scanner, then we recommend the free versions of Malwarebyres and SUPERAntiSpyware. It is a good idea to run them because unfortunately, no one product is going to find everything all the time.

Thanks for the advice.  I will uninstall Spybot and see what happends.

BTW, I didn't think it was a problem as I have Spybot and NIS10 on my XP desktop and they have lived together without any problems.  Perhaps Vista causes these two to conflict when XP does not.  I do also use Malwarebytes to every week as a backup.

I'll keep you posted.

Chris

No luck.  Uninstalled Spybot and ran a full system scan with NIS10.  It froze.  Things ran well and then after a 300K items scanned, the whole laptop froze.  Needed hard restart.  Quick scan works fine.  Full scan with Malwarebytes is fine.

I ran sfc /scannow and found four unrepairable items:

dfrgfat.exe

printfilterpipelineproxy.dll

settings.ini

syshiper.exe

The laptop runs fine otherwise and gives no problems.  Any other advice?

Thanks,

Chris

Hello csgreeley

Are you using Diskkeeper software? Can you please run HiJackThis for us please and save and post the log here .

Please download HiJackThis from http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Choose the executable and save it on your desktop. Run the file and select the first option on the main menu "Do a system scan and save a log file". When this is finished, Notepad will open with the log file in it. Save the log file and attach it to a post here via the Add Attachments Please don't attempt to fix anything that it shows until someone checks out the log. Thanks.

Perhaps a log from HiJackThis will shed some light on this problem.

Here is the Hijackthis log file.

While running Hijack this reported an error that the system denied access to the HOSTS file.  I assume this this is normal.

Thanks,

Chris
