NIS 2010 Integrated LiveUpdate with slow connection

I connect to the Internet using a 56 KB/s dial-in modem. I have used NIS 2008 under Win XP SP3 for the past two years without significant problems, but have just replaced it with NIS 2010. I was surprised to find out that LiveUpdate, which previously was a separate program, is now integrated in NIS 2010. Not only that, but I have almost no influence on it.

With NIS 2008, LiveUpdate offered options so that I could select interactive mode and thus choose which updates I wanted to download. If there was a large volume of data I could spread the individual items over several days. Now once I start LiveUpdate I only have the possibility of cancelling the operation. Currently it wants to download about 80 MB, which would take around 5 hours always supposing that the line stays up that long. This is inacceptable to me.

I have a friend who has broadband access and I can download Intelligent Updater there so that I can update the virus definitions, but he doesn't live close by and I can't do that often. I looked on the Web and found a later version of the LiveUpdate program (version 3.5.0.64) which I downloaded and installed after booting Windows, but it doesn't even see NIS 2010 so does not update it.
Since Intelligent Updater can update a range of Symantec software I don't see why the separate LiveUpdate program can't do the same.
I contacted the local Helpline but was informed that nothing can be done, i.e. take it or leave it!.
On the NIS 2010 box which I purchased there is nothing which says that a broadband connection is required.
This is very disappointing and if I can't find a solution soon there may well be one Symantec customer fewer.
