NIS 2010 UI doesn't execute

I'm running xp pro sp3.

This started a couple of weeks ago. Every now and then when I try to open NIS 2010 it doesn't do anything and there is no taskbar icon. The only way to get it working is to end process on ccsvchst.exe and uistub.exe; then restart the norton service.

Strangely, after doing the above uistub.exe no longer appears as a running process.

Advice?

Hello max221

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

It sounds like either you have a bad install of the program or you have malware that is interfering with the proper running of the program. Do you have any other live security program running at the same time?

I think the only other security program is windows defender. I hvae adaware, but real-time protection is off.

Hello max

Check and see if there is a service running for adaware. If there is one actually running, then there is a part of it running which may interfere.

Hmm... indeed there is aawservice.exe and aawtray.exe running. Is there any consequence to disabling those services?

Hello max221

Adaware will not be running in the background if you disable it.  It is also possible that having had the program installed when you installed NIS may have interfered with the installation.  The free versions of Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware are the 2 scanners which are recommended for use along with your Norton product. The free versions of these 2 programs are on demand scanners and no part of the program is running in the background.

I suppose if you want to run Adaware, then you would have to enable it again in services before you can use that program.

Based upon your symptoms, you may want to try this hotfix. At least it won't hurt.

I have installed this hotfix; as the problem was intermittent, I won't be able to say for sure if it is the solution; I will report back in a few days.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks for trying it out. I look forward to hearing how this goes.

Looks like that fix did it; thanks!

I'm glad that it worked! Feel free to come back and post if you have any future issues.
