NIS 2011 Error failed to connect to the LiveUpdate server - 8921, 251

When trying to either Update, Reputation Scan, or Acivate my product it gives the error - Failed to connect to the LiveUpdate server - and then following to the More Info button it gives me the following error numbers 8921 and 251... Has anyone expirenced this problem. I have installed the product before many times without expirencing this problem, I would not know why it does just now... Help from an Norton Mod would be appritiated.

Well, I'm not a Norton Mod....maybe this will help. Or, maybe this will help.

Thanks for helping. but no that did not work.

Hi James,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Can you give us a little more detail please?

Which Norton product do you have and what is the version? You can find the version from Help & Support > About or Support > About depending on your product and year. Also what version of Windows and SP (service pack) do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Is your Norton product currently installed and you started having this problem recently? Or are you attempting to do an initial install and are not able to complete it properly?

Do you have any other security software installed on your computer along with your Norton product or while attempting to install your Norton product? Any other security software with a real-time component must be uninstalled and run a removal tool provided by the vendor of the other software before attempting to install your Norton security software. Attempting to install your Norton product in the presence of other security software may not allow proper installation of Norton or may result in problems later on.

Also, what type of home network do you have? And do you use a proxy server? If you use IE, double check in Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab and see if there is anything configured for proxy server.

We can assist more once we have more details as requested above.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thank-you for your support on the subject. I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2011 Ver. 18.5.0.125. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2 in 32-bit. I do not use any other software with a built-in protection. But, I have used System Mechanics 10's built in security fixing and tools they provide minus the Protection Guard. I am on a broadband network (Cable) that does not require Proxys and does not work with proxys. Nothing is confiqured in IE for proxys. Note to add... I am using a dual boot Apple Early 2009, and run Windows natively. I had started having these problems about a month ago when reinstalling Windows onto the machine.

ok Well…

Your install / run / use of System Mechanic.... before or after your problems.

What problems are these problems

What prompted your reinstall of Windows  (clean install / repair install )

Your re-install of Norton after your reinstall of Windows is what prompted this Topic ?

I have had annoying problems for a while now. I cant name them all, but I am sure it is not what windows is designed to do. I re-install windows because what seems to be the problem, makes it hard to do anything on the computer without it corrupting so bad, that you cannot even use it. Hence why I reinstall a lot. With norton in the last install would not update, but only after I installed the updates would it update. Now it just does not update at all, no matter what I try. I can still download the update and then update that way, but cannot recive from in program, nor use the reputation scan, or Norton Insight.

System Mechanic does not seem to have an affect with norton, but I will try uninstalling the iolo software and reinstall Norton and see if to any affect.

I suggest you to follow AllenM's suggestions. If that does not work, try installing Norton DNS on your computer. You can find the steps in the following Knowledge Base article:

Installing Norton DNS on my computer

If that does not work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Norton product.

Wondering if System Mechanic stores changes it makes and if restoring those changes may be prudent before removing Sys Mechanic....but, that may just confuse/compound the issue.  IDK

The time line related to System Mechanic activity and Norton error is unknown....

As I have no first hand experience with Sys Mechanic... I'm just wondering ?

Also, wondering about the mutiple re-installs of Windows ....related to Sys Mechanic or other issues.

Well all of a sudden did Norton start working again! I used NPE and sys mechanic with nortons scans and removed most of what was the problem was... Still working on it though... I'll let you know how it goes. Mainly when using NPE before only after I would use sys mechanics software to open the files to be exposed... did it find the bad file, then windows would corrupt, and not be usable anymore, now its gone, but do still believe there is spyware ect. still on. For the most part it is working better now, so eh... When I have the money will I just pay for the Virus Removal from Symantec Inc. I still have more to do though...

Thanks for the help,

James

Thanks for the link to NortonDNS.com it should help a lot. Was using OpenDNS.com but that went to the crapper. Probably providing much needed info for the hacker, but oh well...
