NIS 2011 Full Scan Hangs

I installed NIS 2011 ran update until no more were available.  I ran the removal tool and reinstalled NIS ran updates again.  I'm running Windows XP SP3 with all the latest updates.  Quick scan runs with no problem, everything else seems to run OK.  When I try to run a full scan it hangs and I have to use task manager to end out.  After this Norton disappears from the system and I have to reboot to get NIS back up again.  Microsoft essentials doesn't find any problems with virus, trojans or malware.  Any suggestions ?

If the problem persists after uninstall please do reply back!

You can also disable the Compressed Files Scan and then run a scan. Is there any particular file at which the scan stalls?

Most likely Microsoft Security Essentials is interfering with the Norton scan.  Running two real-time security products is a no-no, as they tend to conflict with each other, rather than compliment one another.  This will cause performance problems for your PC, and lessen your protection, as neither security program will be able to work correctly with the other program present and interferring.

I uninstalled Microsoft Essentials and ran another full scan.  NIS crashed and disappeared.  I'm going to reboot to bring NIS back.  Any other suggestions, I'm at a loss.

Did you try disabling Compressed Files Scan and then ran a scan? If not, please try that.

Do you receive any Symantec Framework errors when the crash happens or receive any 8504,104 error at startup?

Hi try what Cyber life suggested disabling the scan does help resolve the error !

I've disabled compressed file scan and am running a new scan.  I don't get an error message because NIS is totally gone after the crash.  However when I reboot just before shutdown I get a message sayinf Error system dll could not do something because the system was down.

Hi Just in case do scan your Pc with Malware Bytes to ensure if you have any threats not being detected

I turned the compressed file scan off and ran a full scan, no problems and nothing found.  Thanks for the help !  Is there a reason and a workaround for the compressed file bug ?

Hi,

It would be great if you can gather log files for this problem.

Here is how you can collect debug logs:

1) Visit the below site:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080507162141EN

2) Make one change to the steps listed:

Step 2.6: Check all the advanced options

3) In the end, no files will be sent to Symantec automatically. You will be shown the location of the logs after you complete the form after hitting the "finish" button.

Let me know once you collect the log files. I will help you in uploading them.

Thanks!
