NIS 2011, magicJack, and Windows 7

Just a quick note to pass on some information regarding installing NIS 2011 on your Windows 7 magicJack-equipped computer.

It may have been coincidence, but when I upgraded to NIS 2011 this morning, the magicJack only gave me a continuous dial tone when I tried to dial. I could receive calls, but they couldn't hear me.

I signed out of the soft phone, stopped the magicJack process in task manager, and unplugged the dongle. After waiting a minute or so, I plugged in the dongle, started the process, signed in, and everything seems to work fine.

BTW:  Thanks to everyone at Symantec for another great product update!

Hi,

did you check the program's firewall settings? You should change it from Auto to Allow.

Thanks- that would have been my next step, but it wasn't necessary.  I assumed NIS 2011 handles ports or programs differently, since this is the first time I've had to do this.

I just mentioned this in case anyone else has the same issue.   Luckily it's not a big deal.

Hello,  Thanks for all the good stuff.

I just downloaded norton 2011 upgrade.  I have Windows 7, with I/E 8.  Now,  magic jack mentioned to me a few months ago that they were having problems with Norton's firewall.  They suggested that I disable Norton's firewall and enable the Windows 7 firewall.

I did that and everything seems to be ok.   Could I enable Norton's firewall and if so, would it be a conflict between Norton and Windows 7?

Thanks for any help.

Ron

In discussing this issue with another Guru I was informed of something I was not aware of which has changed with Windows 7. Windows 7 has a requirement that any Windows certified 3rd party firewall must take control of the different aspects of the Windows firewall and is not allowed to relinquish control of the Windows firewall. This requirement is there to help prevent malware from being able to take control of the firewall.

An interesting article you might want to read.

The above quote is taken from AllenM's post from the thread I posted above. I think that this answers your question about any conflicts between windows 7 firewall and NIS 2011 firewall.
