NIS 2011 Repeatedly Warns About Excluded File

Hi.

I have a large RAR file containing backups of old e-mails. Inside the RAR file is a copy of cokegift.exe which NIS 2011 correctly identifies as a Joke program. I know this file is in the archive but I want to keep the archive as is. I have added the RAR file to both of NIS 2011's exclude settings ("Items to Exclude from Scans" and "Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect and SONAR Detection") but NIS 2011 keeps warning me about the file every few minutes.

The only option it gives me is to delete the file as it says that the file is too large to be backed up, so I just cancel the alert.

How can I stop NIS 2011 warning about this file?

I am running Windows XP SP3 with all latest updates applied. My Norton Internet Security 2011 is Version: 18.5.0.125

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've got the exact same problem. I have a .7z file that contains a network tool called superscan.exe that Norton identified as a threat. I know the file is ok, so, as you did, I excluded the file from both the "Items to Exclude from Scans" and "Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect and SONAR Detection", but I continue to get alerts multiple times a day for the supposedly excluded file. There is no option to "ignore" when the Action Required window pops up, my only choice is to delete or close out the window.

Looking for a solution to this issue as well.

If the files are showing in Norton Security History under Unresolved Security Risks you can click "Clear Entries" to stop Norton from reminding you about them.  If they have been properly excluded from future scans you should not see them again once you have cleared them from history.  Before clearing the entries you might want to export the contents of Unresolved Security Risks, using the Export link at the bottom of the window, so you will have a backup should you need it.  I would also suggest making a backup copy of the file beforehand.

Yes, clearing the entry from the Unresolved Security Risks list appears to have stopped the repeated alerts. Just to clarify the steps for others using Norton Internet Security 2011:

  • Open the main Norton Internet Security window
  • Under Computer Protection, click History (next to Scan Now), which will open the Security History dialog.
  • Select Unresolved Security Risks from the Show drop-down menu at the top left side of the dialog.
  • Click the Clear Entries button at the bottom of the dialog.
  • Click the Close button to close the Security History dialog.
  • Assuming you have already excluded the file from scanning, this should prevent the repeated Action Required alerts.

Thanks again for the solution, SOJ!
