Whenever I install NIS 2011 (or 2010 for that matter) within 12 hours both of my processors are running at 100% utilization.
According to Task Manager ccSvcHost.exe is the culprit which appears to be NIS 2011.
I tend to leave FireFox running while away from the computer and was wondering if NIS has some sort of problem with add-ins or some other rogue process that's browser generated. I'm looking at the Task Manager right now and my CPU usage is 4% steady (while I'm typing) so it's clearly a cause and effect from NIS 2011.
I've done a fresh install of Windows 7 just to be sure and in fact, it's NIS 2011 that's causing the problem. Not sure if you guys are familiar with a browser-generated error that would hog CPU cycles like that.
Ideas?
NIS 2011
Windows 7 Professional N
Dell m2400 dual CPU, 8gb laptop
Firefox 3.6.10
I appreciate the quick response but I think the problem goes beyond that.
It's not that it sometimes hits 100% CPU usage. It hits it when I'm not even using the computer. For example, when I go to bed at night I leave all of my apps on - Outlook, Firefox, et al. Processor utilization is maybe 15% at most.
The next day when I wake up the computer is crawling. Processor usage never goes below 100% and all of the apps are at a near standstill. This only happens when NIS is installed.
I'm wondering if NIS is blocking some other process that is causing a conflict. This is such an extreme example. Any ideas?
Hi wschroter,
Check the Norton Tasks link in the Performance panel to see if one of the resource intensive tasks, such as the Optimizer, may be running. If the issue seems not to be related to any specific task, you can try a fix that has been suggested for similar unexplained high CPU usage observations. As explained in the following post, one user found that using the option to disable Auto-Protect "until system restart," and then restarting the computer, ended the high CPU demands.
