I have NIS 2011 loaded on my desktop and laptop machines. I found that I could not reliably share files between them without adding them to Trust Control in the Firewall settings. The problem is that I only seem to be able to add 1 network interface per machine. On the laptop I can choose the wireless or the wired, If I attempt to add the other to Trust Control it just resets the original rule instead of adding another. Does anyone know if it is possible to add both interfaces to Trust Control? My workaround at this point is to disable the Firewall on both machines when I use the wired interface.
Ok, maybe a shorter question I am unable to verify myself at the moment. When it asks for a device name for a Trust Control rule, does it have to be an actual device name? Or can I just call a machine "laptop-wireless" and "laptop-wired"?
Hi xxjackxx,
You may be overcomplicating things. Norton should be able to automatically see other devices on the network and allow sharing if it is enabled on the PC. Try this:
Disconnect the other PCs from the network. Open the Network Security Map and make sure that Remote Monitoring is turned OFF. Next, close the Network Security Map (this must be closed prior to the next step). Then, in the main Norton window, go to Network Settings > Network Security Map and click Purge [+]. Now reconnect your laptops. The Network Security Map should recognized them automatically as you connect them.
In the Network Security Map in the Network Details dropdown box you should see Local Area Network, which will contain devices on the network that are automatically detected. Trust Control is only for devices that you add manually. If Norton can see the devices, but you can not share with them, edit the device's Trust Level to Shared, or Full Trust. If the other computers do not appear in the Local Area Network, click the small "+" sign under Network Details to add them to the Security Map.
Thanks for the reply and I suspect that somehow I did over complicate things, but at some point there used to be no issue and then all of a sudden I could not share files between my machines. After opening the Trust Control I see that there were actually 2 entries for my laptop, but with different settings. I set them both for full trust and it works fine. I am going to leave them that way as I don't see where that should cause any issues.
Hi xxJackxx,
There should not be any problem setting specific devices to Full Trust as you said.
I would recommend however that you keep the parent level Network device (LAN or wireless interface) at Restricted so that new devices connecting in have restricted access until and unless you yourself change them to a different trust level.
Another important thing for wireless networks is just to make sure that your have a secured network through your router using a good security protocol/encryption and passphrase.
Best wishes.
