NIS 2012 blocks Java applications from accessing the internet

Hi, so I noticed when I was trying to play the game Minecraft (which is written in Java) that it was giving me errors related to a denied internet connection.  After some normal troubleshooting steps, I found that the issue was Norton. (a computer without Norton installed did not have the connection issue)   Upon further investigation, I found that it was not just Minecraft but any Java application, such as a web IRC client, that was unable to connect.

I have attempted to set exceptions for the Minecraft exe, Java exes, and even disable the firewall completely, but it still errors out whenever any Java application tries to access the internet.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java as well as restarted my computer.

Windows 7 x64

EDIT: Suspecting that the issue could be Norton Online Family, even though it is not administering this account.  I will to work it out tomorrow.

I Totally agree with you ,NIS 2012 is blocking any access to Yahoo Games,Chess, Bridge....etc etc.

This is whilst running IE9 in 32 Bit.

If i use 64 Bit IE9 everything loads and works perfectly.

This is using Java 6 Update 27.

When you open your Add-on Manager in your 32-bit IE9 (Tools | Manager Add-ons | Toolbars and Extensions | All Add-ons) are all your Norton and Java extensions enabled?  Please note that I have NIS 2011 and Java 7.0, so the version numbers for your 32-bit IE9 extensions will not be the same as the screenshot below.

If you have the Firefox browser installed on your PC, does Java appear to run correctly from Firefox?

IE9 NIS and Java Add-ons.jpg

------

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 * NIS 2011 v. 18.6.0.29 * IE 9.0 * Firefox 6.0 * Java 7.0 (v. 1.7.0.0)
HP Pavilion dv6835ca, Intel Core2Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83 GHz, 3.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

The following are all enabled in IE 32 Bit:-Java plug-in 1.6.0_27.........Deployment Toolkit.....Java plug in ssv helper.....Norton toolbar....Norton Identity protection.......Norton vulnerability protection.

It is still happening on a regular basis but 64 Bit IE runs perfectly.

You can also try opening 32-bit IE9 and checking your Java installation at http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp.  This should tell you if your Java browser plugins are working correctly in 32-bit IE9 and whether your browser detects the recommended version of Java (currently Java 6 Update 27).

This won't really provde any useful information, however, if  some feature like Identity Safe or the parental controls in NIS 2012/Norton Online Family is blocking Java on specific web sites like Facebook, etc.

Java is installed and working correctly as verified by the link in your reply.

I do not have online family/parental controls enabled at all.

Hey.

A question, have you checked Norton History Logs to see if you can find any clues to why your programs are being blocked?

did you have the same problem with earlier versions of NIS, or is this a new problem for you?

have you tried to uninstall Java from your computer and restart your computer and reinstall Java and see if the problem is still thier.

Good Luck

NIS 2011 worked flawlessly no problems whatsoever.

This problem only arose after firstly upgrading to NIS 2012 then installing Java update 27.

I have uninstalled Java 3 times and reinstalled it,it is verified working ok.

As stated 64 Bit IE9 is perfect with java,in the 32 Bit i have tried everything except uninstalling and reinstalling NIS 2012 but i do not know if it is NIS 2012 conflicting with Java OR Java conflicting with NIS 2012......as both have been updated and nothing else on my computer has changed except for Tuesdays windows updates.

The Norton history does not show any sign of blocking any of the Java applications.

When accessing the Java test page from any browser it errors instantly.

Uninstalling the latest Java (1.7.0.0) and replacing it with 1.6.0.26 fixed the issue.

Hi pcah9:

I noticed that nmkef rolled back to Java 6 Update 26.  I wonder if the Java browser extensions for Java 6 Update 27 are the problem?

If uninstalling Java 6 Update 27 and installing Java 6 Update 26 (32-bit version here; 64-bit version here) doesn't work and if the Recent History and Firewall Activities in your NIS security history don't show any problems with Java, you can temporarily disable the Norton extensions in 32-bit IE9 to see if the Norton Toolbar or Symantec ISP extensions are the cause of the problem.

  1. Open 32-bit IE 9 and click Tools | Manager Add-ons | Toobars and Extensions
  2. Under Show, click All add-ons
  3. Under Symantec Corporation, highlight Symantec NCO BHO and click the Disable button
  4. Repeat Step 3 until all Symantec extensions are disabled
  5. Re-start IE9 and browse to a web page where your Java was not working (e.g., Facebook) and see if Java is now working correctly

IE9 Disable NIS Add-ons.jpg

If Java is working with all your Symantec extensions disabled, go back into the IE9 add-on manager and re-enable the Symantec extensions one at a time and repeat Step 5 until you can figure out which extension is blocking Java.  Remember to re-enable all Symantec extensions before exiting IE9.

If Java still doesn't work with all your Symantec extensions disabled then some other NIS feature (or some other IE9 add-on) is likely causing the problem.

I just had a brain fart.  I think Yahoo Games are actually Flash, not Java, games, so perhaps you have a problem with your Adobe Flash installation.  There are more troubleshooting tips for Yahoo Games here if my instructions below don't work.  If your Flash installation is fine then it's possible that simply clearing the cookies and cache in your 32-bit IE9 browser will solve the problem.

First, check your Flash installation here on the Adobe web site with your 32-bit IE9.  If your Flash isn't working or you don't have the latest Flash v. 10.3.183.7, do the following:

  1. Uninstall Adobe Flash from the Windows Control Panel
  2. Download and run the Adobe Flash Uninstall Utility to clean out remnants of any old installation
  3. Re-boot your PC
  4. Run the Adobe Flash Uninstall Utility again for safe measure
  5. Download the Adobe Flash v. 10.3.183.7 standalone ActiveX installer for IE from the FileHippo site here.  Be sure to download v. 10.3.183.7 (the current stable version) and not a beta test version.  Save the installation file to your hard drive and do not run the installation from your browser
  6. Install Adobe Flash from the Run command (Start | Run) with the new installation file with all browsers and instant messenger software closed
  7. Check your new Flash installation here

If you have Firefox or Chrome, the NPAPI (non-IE) version of Flash v. 10.3.183.7 can be downloaded from FileHippo here. If you prefer you can install Flash from the Adobe site (here for auto-detection of OS and default browser, here for any version of Flash), but I prefer using the standalone installers from FileHippo because Flash occasionally doesn't install correctly when you run the installation from your web browser.

May have fixed your issue but, http://secunia.com/advisories/45173/

Sun Java SE 6 security baseline remains as 1.6.0_26 ; so JRE U27 is only a bug fix .

Full details :-  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u27...

Well i have re-opened this as it was not solved for me,what has solved it is to uninstall nis 2012 and revert back to nis 2011.

There is now no problem whatsoever even with java 7.

So there is a conflict with nis 2012 and java.....This is on windows 7 64 bit and using the 32 bit ie9,64 bit ie9 works perfectly but note in that the norton toolbar is not enabled as Symantec can`t yet fully realise that users like to use 64 bit as this is now and the future.

Sorry i posted the previous without seeing your replies, but i already have the latest flash installed and as for the add-ons well i had tried that as it seemed the logical answer lay there first but to no avail.

On the yahoo games page in 32 bit ie9 sometimes the whole page freezes and to close it you have to right click the preview window or open task manager to close it and other times the actual game will come up like chess for instance but you can`t click anywhere on it as the java aplet will not load as though it is being blocked,so there is definately a conflict with nis 2012 and java on my machine but as stated nis 2011 and java 7 work perfect.

Yes java update 7 (1.7 the next release of Java NOT 1.6.0.27 the one offered on the Java website) is buggy (under 2011 cause never tested under 2012).  It constantly caused the Secunia online test to crash.  After a uninstall of Java 7, you would have to install, uninstall, and reinstall java 1.6.0.27 (offer on the site) before it is recognized properly.  Tested on both 7 and XP and the uninstall 7, install 1.6.0.27, uninstall 1.6.0.27, install 1.6.0.27 procedure is the only way for it to run properly.

Thanks for that gem of a bit of info, may i say what an a-s about face farce to get it to work correctly.

You have to perform that uninstall/install/uninstall/install ritual for the 1.6.0.27 to work properly after installing the Java update 7.  Well, that's the price you would have to pay for installing a version that is not released to the public (not on the get java website), only the devs.

Next time, just check the get Java website (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp) and install the version listed.  Don't bother jumping hoops to install the latest version.

With the constant freezing and non loading of the java applet i had no other option than to either try update 7 to see if it worked as i knew the other versions would not or uninstall nis 2012,in the end my computer works perfect now with nis 2011 and update 7.

Does Secunia OSI crash with Java version 7?

Yahoo! Chess is hanging atm, but Pogo games and other Java applet works OK (could be Yahoo! Chess applet is coded badly/not compatible with latest version).  One of the reason I hate Java applets.  They are bulky and glitchy.  Why can't they switch to flash, which is more reliable IMO.
