NIS 2012 - Trial version to full version

I'm setting up a new PC for my sister and she already has NIS 2011 with a paid subscription.  Can I download and install the trial version of NIS 2012 and I assume there is a place to enter the reg key and then the trial version will become the full version.

Will this work?

Thanks,

Gerry

My initial message didn't come out the way I wanted and I tried to edit it but it didn't work.

She has NIS 2011 with subscription on the OLD PC, and I want to install NIS 2012 on the NEW PC.  I know if all I want to do is to update a current running NIS to the latest version on the same PC you can do the update that was suggested.  In fact I just did it for my PC.

But in this case it will be a new PC with no NIS installed at all.  I have done the procedure I described in the past but I just wanted to see if it would still work.

Thanks,

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

You get one hour after you post your message to come back and edit it. There's a button in the upper right corner of your message 'options' when you click on it a dropdown will display.

OK, do a control panel uninstall of the existing program from the old computer. Be sure to save the key [ all 25 characters]

Then use the link I gave you to download a new copy of 2012. Use your existing key to activate it. If you get the error message that you don't have any installations left go here: http://us.norton.com/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

This is the customer support chat line. They have the tools to get things fixed quickly.

Keep us in the loop.

Gerry,

Most new computers come with some kind of security program preinstalled on a trial basis and if it's not the same NIS that you want to install on the new PC you must remove it and clean up afterwards.

If it is not a norton product please tell us what it is and we can give you links to the instructions and special tools that most products have available to clean up with.

If it is Norton but not Norton Internet Security then again it is best to remove it but let us know exactly what it is.

After you uninstall the NIS 2011 from the old PC (that's going out of use? Otherwise many NIS's come for up to 3 PCs) the easy way to get the NIS 2012 could be to use the new PC to log into your MyNortonAccount as set up for 2011 and use the Download button there since it will:

Remove any Norton that is installed (it may ask if you want to save settings and you should say No); clean up after that; download the current version of Norton Internet Security already activated and install it .....  You should then run LiveUpdate Manually a few times with a restart inbetween in order to get last minute updates and fixes.

After you have done all this, if you find that you have used up a second activation just contact the Norton OnLine Support via the CHAT route as below and they will fix that for you. Similarly if you had a 1 PC version of 2011 and get a message that it is already in use since uninstalling does not always trigger a change in the central database.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

Feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Just an advise,

Using the New Pc login to your Norton account through www.myNortonaccount.com

if your having problems with the password just click "Recover it here" just beside the password field.

*Login in to the email address and check for an email from Norton

*follow the link that is included in the email

*create a desired password

*proceed with log-in

*click download on your active subscription - it will download NIS12 download manager, no need to uninstall any previous versions of NIS, or any other products as NIS12 installation will auto detect and will remove or will give you the option to uninstall any conflicting softwares/ security softwares

*read the terms and conditions, after you click on Agree and Install everything will be automatic

-if installation is completed successfully, its really advisable if you complete "Live update" to ensure Optimum protection

-a full system scan is also advisable

and ofcourse if you encounter any problems, Norton support is always willing to help ^^

Hi Dion_O,

Norton may not properly recognize another security program and if it does probably will not remove all remnants of some other security software.

It is always recommended to uninstall the other security software and also run a removal tool from that vendor to ensure it's complete removal. This should be done before installing Norton.

Gerry, be sure to check your Norton Account for how many activations you currently have. If you do not intend to use Norton any longer on the old computer you should as Dick suggested remove it from that computer first. When you reinstall on the new computer you should check with Customer Service, not just if you receive a message that you have no activations remaining but also if the number of activations is less than what you should have. E.g., you may have two activations left and if you remove it from your old computer and install on the new computer you should ultimately end up with 2 remaining still.

I would also recommend looking into Norton Management which is a great tool with which you can remove Norton 2012 from a computer and free up an activation without having to contact Customer Service.

More on Norton Management.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for correcting Allen,

You have a good point and I agree.

And Gerry, regarding the number of installations/activations available, if you think you should still have at least 2 activations left but its showing that you only have one, you can always raise that concern to Customer Service and they will assist you with transferring the activation from the old computer that you had onto the new computer, and of course just provide the email address that is associated to your Norton account/ Product serial # / Product Key.

Best of lucks.

WOW everyone!!  THanks for all the advise.

First off, the new PC is a Dell and it come with McAfee (which I hate!!) and I've gone thru its removal before.  First you do the normal add/remove for it and then you run a special progarm, which I already downloaded, to do the final removal.  I bought a Dell for my self a while ago.

When the above is done the new PC will be clean of all installed security programs.  Then I want to insatll NIS 2012 and I have the original key.  It would be nice to just download NIS 2012 as indicated above, but I don't see any link except the one if I have any trouble.

As far as the multi PC license, she only has one PC so if the old PC counts as one and the new PC counts as two, even though the old PC will never be used any more, its no big deal.

So the only think I need is a link to downloading NIS 2012 and I'm all set!

THANKS AGAIN to everyone!!
Gerry

Hi ALL,

I still cannot edit my post and its only a few minutes after I posted it.

I clicked on the Options and then Edit and I get back to the editing screen and I wanted to change:

So the only think . . .

to

So the only thing  . .

And I make the change and then click on post and the message remains the same, although it now had a yellow background and says at the top that it was edited.  I tried it several times and each time the change does NOT take effect!!

Thanks,

Gerry

Gerry,

Don't rush the system. Click on 'options' then click on 'edit' then give the system time to bring back your message. It usually displays the way it's stored and then reesets into something you can read and edit. There is a one hour time limit on being able to edit but that shouldn't be a problem if you see an error immediatley after posting. If you are a slow learneer as I am you can even edit a message two or three times to get it correct within the allowed time.

PS: the spedd check feature is useful and it can learn - sometimes faster than a user I know.

Stay well and surf safe

edit just to check my instructions are correct :smileyhappy:

additional edit

One more observation. Your message will 'blink' when the autosave feature is active. It's harmless but can make a good typist lose a few characters :smileysad:

enough!

Hi Gerry,

The link to NIS 2012 (English version) is here  Let us know if you need a different language.

If you think it is even possible that you might add another computer to this subscription I would recommend going to Chat as noted above and Customer Service will add the activation back on for you.

It is better to do this now rather than wait until you actually need it later on...

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Dick,

Its no big deal, but when I went to edit the post I did see it first come up as the viewable post but I waited a few seconds and it did change to the editable version.  I was able to place the cursor in the proper position, delete the "k" and change it to a "g" and saw the change.  Then I clicked Post, and it took be back to the thread BUT the post was NOT changed!  The word was still "think"!!  Was I supposed to click on something other than Post when I was done editing.  Again, but no big deal but I do believe I was using the system properly!

As far as getting NIS 2012 for my sister's new PC, I just downloaded it to my PC so I have it ready and I'm all set to go!

THANKS AGAIN for everyone's help!!

Gerry
