NIS 2012 WILL NOT COMPLETE Scans After 8/23/2012 5:21 AM Live Update

Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1

Norton Internet Security 2012 19.8.0.14 (no other AV or anti-malware products ever installed)

Most recent Live Update 8/23/2012 5:21 AM CDT

Updates Applied 2012-08-23 7:49:03

After reboot for installation of the live update, there was no Norton icon in the task bar. Opening NIS from the start menu displayed the main menu and restored the icon to the task bar. A Quick Scan initiated from a right click on the task bar icon produced a "Security Request" popup

-----

The scan is not complete. There may be undetected security risks on your computer. Are you sure you want to cancel the scan?

  YES NO

----

When NO was selected the popup closed the Norton icon disappeared from the task bar and Norton Internet Security main window would NOT open from the start menu!

Logging off and on restored the Norton icon to the task bar and it was again possible to open the main Norton Internet Security window.

UNFORTUNATELY this error persists and is repeatable!!  Both Quick and Full System scans do NOT produce a "Results" popup and it appears that they terminate early and that NIS 2012 has terminated also.  (FWIW the history reports that the scans were completed but this is almost certainly false!)

In SUMMARY - the most recent live update appears to have made it impossible to successfully complete system scans and to have "hosed" NIS.  This is a SERIOUS PROBLEM!!

I would like to know:

  (1) How I can tell if NIS is running using the Task Manager?

  (2) How and when this problem will be corrected?
