NIS 2013 - antyvirus protection turns OFF

My NIS 2013 seems not as reliable as the previous versions. Which makes me quite disappointed, because I trusted Norton FOR YEARS.
What happens is:
after starting up Windows (XP sp3) I get a message that there is a problem with Norton, and there is this red/white cross on its icon. So I go to Norton's main panel hit FIX NOW. However after a couple of secs it says:
Auto-Protect  Not Fixed
SONAR Protection   Not Fixed
Antispyware   Not Fixed.

There is no problem with updating, I have the latest version, however I'm UNABLE to run a SCAN. It says:
YOUR PRODUCT IS INACTIVE.

So when it happened 1st time, I contacted Norton Online support and they advised me to reinstall the whole product.
After I've done it, problem has gone......until now. (It was running fine for couple of weeks)

Exactly the same issue!

Is there a solution for it? Because I'm not going to reinstall it again and wait until it goes wrong 3rd time. I'd rather switch back to NIS 2012.
