NIS 2013 problem transferring files between computers on network

I too am having this issue, I use NIS 2013 and Win XP SP-3, I recently replaced a PC, disabled NIS on the old PC and installed NIS on the new PC. I changed the workgroup name to match my other PC, made file and printer sharing available, trust level is shared, full trust. I can view the files on the new PC but can not transfer files, I get an error "you do not have access rights" or something like that, both PC's are logged in as "administrator". I have set up the new PC exactly as the old PC so there should be no issues with file transfer, is there a new setting I am not aware of?

What version of Windows is on the new PC that replaced the old one you refer to? If it is WIndows 7 or later then they default to a network name of Homegroup whereas XP used Workgroup and as you may have found they can't talk to each other.

Try changing the name so that both use Workgroup which is permitted in the newer Windows but is not the default.

Let us know about this and what happens ..... I'm not very good on networking but I know this is a problem because I see it in other forums where I do support. But someone here will know how to work around this if that is the problem.

You may also have a problem with printers if they are plugged into the XP machine and you want to print from the WIndows 7 or later machine if that is 64 bit .....

Your problem is that you do not have write access to the folders on your new PC, which I assume is Windows 7 or 8. It's not a NIS problem.

The concept of sharing in Win7 (homegroups) is different from Windows XP. Google a bit on that subject, if you are not familiar with it. You do not have automatic write access.

If you want to share with a WIn XP computer you should give the specific user write/read acces to your folders in the WIN7/8 PC's. You can also specify 'Everyone' on the sharing list.

You can solve the problem by updating the access on your folders : Right click on the folders you want to share, click on Share with and then select Specific persons (or the like; I have a Dutch version). You then select Everyone from the drop down list, click add and change the acess from Read to Read/Write.

That should do it for a general approach.

Both PC's running win xp sp-3, with some time and patience I solved my own issue. I had to change the firewall settings from "default: trust (protected)" to "full trust" on both PC's, I may or may not be fully protected but I am now able to move shared files via the network from PC to PC. Unfortunately I was not able to find much info on whether or not my systems are still fully protected but my need outweighs the possibility of not being fully protected.

Those trust settings are for devices on your network. As long as they are secure and protected you have no worries.
