NIS 2013 Will NOT open

Hi, I am in a bit of trouble with which seems no way out.

Recently my laptop has started to say I don't have internet access when I clearly do. It started with Steam not being able to connect, now my browsers won't even connect to the internet... I ran the troubleshoot window on Internet Explorer and it said that there was a problem with Norton Internet Security, so I turned to open that then I realised it wouldn't open at all, the desktop icon is gone and if I run a scan I get a uistub.exe error pop up. It just won't load and worst of all, I can't access the internet on the browsers I have, to download the R&R tool to even try to fix the issue. Which then lead me to try and repair it from control panel, It won't load when I click "uninstall/change"

I am running out of options here, I am currently luckily on my Mac but for the family laptop... right now is useless as we really can't do nothing on it internet wise.

I've rebooted etc. I only wanted to configure or turn off the norton firewall temporarily to see if it'd fix my problem for Steam but Norton won't even load to let me do that.

Any help is appreciated,

Many Thanks

Try booting into Safe mode with Network access. Safe mode will prevent all non important Windows services from running, including Norton's. Be careful not to download or install anything from the web as you could very much install malware. If you wanna try nuking Norton from your pc, download the Norton removal tool from www.Norton.com/nrt Norton can be re-downloaded from www.Norton.com/latestnis I recommend after re-installing Norton after the removal with the removal tool, to uninstall Norton using the add-remove program. This will clean up any debris left behind by the dirty Norton Removal Tool removal. Norton Removal Tool is akin, in my opinion, to blowing up Norton to remove it. It leaves behind quite a few of debris.

Shoot. Norton counted the period as part of the site link, thus breaking it in the above post. Use the links www.Norton.com/latestnis for the re-download of Norton and www.Norton.com/nrt for the Norton Removal Tool.

Ah thanks, totally forgot about doing that. First thing tomorrow I shall try that. Hopefully will sort it out. & Thanks for the links will keep them handy for tomorrow also. Will post update.

I would like to add that if you wish to keep the local identity safe, you will need to install the 2012 version of Norton first from www.Norton.com/nis12 before doing an over the top install of the 2013 version.

The “proper” clean up and re-install procedure on a pc where Norton is broken and unable to uninstall via add/remove control panel is to first run the Norton Removal Tool. Reboot the pc as instructed. Install the 2013 version. Wait for the installation to complete. Then uninstall the 2013 program you have just installed using the add/remove program. Reboot the pc as instructed. Go to c:\programdata and delete the “Norton” and “Nortoninstaller” folder there. Reboot the pc.

Here the procedure splits two ways. If you wish to use the local id safe, first install the 2012 version from www.Norton.com/nis12. When Norton 2012 completed it’s install activate it and created the local id safe. There is no need to import yet. Just the creation of the safe is necessary as the 2013 version only allows the creation of the online version of the safe. Once the creation of the safe is completed, run the Norton 2013 installer you downloaded earlier to perform an over the top installation. Reboot as necessary. Run live update and reboot / apply patch as necessary until it reads no update necessary. When that’s happen, reboot your pc one last time to clean up any installation files from the updates. When that’s done, open the Norton program and go to support > about and make sure the version is at least 20.3 (version must match the latest sticky post in the forum regarding version updates).

Done exactly what you have said this morning. Ran in safe mode with networking and downloaded the tool to remove, installed then uninstalled correctly and finally installed again. Thanks to you I am posting this on my windows laptop now, working perfectly! Can't thank you enough for your help.
