NIS 2014 exipired for a minute, now quick scan won't start

OK, this one is kind of strange. My NIS 2014 installation was within a day of expiring. Yesterday I fired up the desktop, new key in hand, to renew. As I was entering the new key, the system tray icon changed from the green checkmark to the red x, and popup messages started pointing out that the firewall, antivirus, etc, were shutting down. I finished entering the new key and got a message stating that activation was successful. The icon changed back to a green checkmark.

Now, on my two Windows 7 computers, quick scan no longer initiates on it's own. Before the brief expiration, quick scan was always the first activity to start up when the computer is idle. It used to run several times a day. Live update is still running on it's own, but quick scan never starts by itself. I can still run it manually by clicking the start button in the norton task list.

My third computer is running Vista, and everything seems to be normal on that one. Quick scan on the Vista machine still starts on it's own.

I'm assuming that a removal and reinstall is in my immediate future.

The subscription status is fine -- 365 days on all three machines.  After running the Get Support, I got a message that it had repaired one item. I looked through the history logs and could not find any details of what was "repaired".  In any event, quick scan still won't start by itself. I verified again, just to be sure, that this only happens on my two Windows 7 x64 machines. The Vista machine (32 bit) has been completely normal since the renewal.

Even though it's a PITA and time consuming, I really don't object to a removal and re-installation. I've probably done at least five over-the-top version upgrades, and it might be good to clean things out and start over.

The repair done by Get Support is not loggd anywhere.  It has been suggested on the Product Suggestions Board so that users will know what was fixed.

What are you using to determine that Quick Scan will not start by itself?

Are you looking on the Performance Chart or looking in Scan Results in History?

I just pull up the Norton Tasks list. I normally look at the list every other day or so just to make sure everything is running as it should. I noticed that Quick scan hadn't run since before the product renewal, 24 hours earlier. I've also noted that, when the task list is showing, that quick scan normally is one of the first tasks to run after the computer goes into an idle state. I've purposely left the 2 Win7 computers idle for hours (and the performance window verifies the idle state), and still nothing.  The Vista machine shows quick scan starting to run, and runs for 5 minutes or so, almost immediately after reaching an idle state.

FWIW,

My Norton Task shows the last time Quick Scan ran was 3/1/2014 @ 3:36:23 PM,

My Performance Chart and Scan Results History shows the same thing.

My LiveUpdate History shows the following ran during Idle (as compared to LiveUpdatre runa dn Performance fli[p that shows Idle time)

Norton Web Protection Definitions,Norton Virus Definitions X64,Norton Antispam Definitions, on 3/1/2014 @  3:31:56 PM,

The History says the Quick Scan ran for 4 minutes and 17 seconds - which would be awfully close to making sense that the Quick Scan ran after the definitions were downloaded.

Quick Scan does not run everytime the system goes into Idle - there are preset logics that must be met for it run - such as the first Idle after a virus defintion download.

Have you restarted your computers lately? Windows computers can benefit greatly from a restart once in a while to get all the ducks in a row again.

OK, just to wrap this up...

Yank, I understand that quick scan doesn't run every time the system goes idle. At a minimum, on my machines it would always run first thing in the morning (after Liveupdate) soon after starting or bringing the computers out of hibernation. The 2 Win7 machines weren't doing this after the expiration, but the Vista machine was.

Peterweb, yeah, I think I wore out the restart button while troubleshooting this. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Anyway, I went ahead and removed NIS via the norton removal tool, then reinstalled from scratch. Good thing I kept a copy of NIS 2012 so I could keep my local vault.  All seems to be working fine now.

Not sure if I should mark this as "solved" since there could have been a simpler solution, but after years of over-the-top version upgrades, I figured it was time to clean things up anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
