NIS and Thunderbird 3.1.x

I'm a new user... I just replaced McAfee Total Protection 2010 with NIS 2011 and I have a question about email scanning.

As far as I can tell, only Microsoft email applications are supported for spam removal. However, I'm more concerned with email scanning than with spam flagging. Thunderbird does a fair job of recognizing spam on it's own.

The box says that email scanning is supported for standard POP-3 and SMTP compatible email clients. However, because Thunderbird isn't specifically mentioned... at least as far as I can tell, I'd like to know one way or another, whether my emails are being scanned.

Thanks,

Hi RonH,

Email scanning is independent of the email client you are using.  It does however require that port 110 for incoming mail and port 25 for outgoing mail be used.  Many ISPs are now requiring that other, secure ports be used instead, and in those cases it is best to disable Norton email scanning, since it will not work and could interfere with the sending and receiving of messages.

The server port settings you are using will be shown in your email client Account Options.

OK, thanks, SendOfJive. I appreciate the response.

All of my email providers have moved away from ports 25 and 110. In fact, a couple of them block port 25 specifically. I guess that means no email scanning which is a bummer. For whatever it's worth, so far at least, I haven't noticed any problems sending or receiving mail with email scanning enabled.

Do you have any idea when, or if, Norton will support other email ports?

Hi Ron,

An added note. Even when NIS does not scan incoming/outgoing messages, NIS auto-protect still checks everything (including email) as it is saved to disk.

Email scanning is an added layer on top of this and unless you wanted anti-spam, it is largely redundant since auto-protect will always protect you anyway.

Also, before installing NIS how did you remove McAfee Total Protection? If you used just the conventional method via Control panel some things may have been left behind.

It is recommend to use a removal tool when you are changing security software like this to ensure complete removal of the old so that there is no interference with the new software.

If you have not already run it, you can find the McAfee removal tool at the following location.

Best wishes.

Hi Allen,

I used the full tilt bozo method to remove McAfee... including the McAfee removal tool, but thanks for the link anyway.

NIS 2011 seems to be running fine. I don't have a single complaint so far. I was just wondering about the email scanning feature.

One other question though. Is there a manual I can download for NIS 2011? I've been using the built in help file but it would be nice to have a big fat PDF to print out or browse at my leisure.

Thanks,

Hello RonH

Here is the link for the manual for NIS 2011

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Hi Ron,

I provided the link for McAfee removal tool because many folks don't realize the importance of doing this. I am pleased that you had already done so. :smileyhappy:

The NIS Help is pretty good but I found the NIS 2011 user guide at the following link:

Hi Floplot,

LOL, we're at it again. :smileyvery-happy:

Hello RonH,

If it's any help, I have been using Thunderbird since W7 came out and it sits well with NIS. I haven't had to do anything as it all appears to be set automatically. Norton has caught a few PDF virus's with the email scanner, about four this past month so I wouldn't be too concerned about anything, you are well and truly protected IMHO!

Hi Floplot,

Thanks for the link. I appreciate it. However, I already download that one. I was hoping for something....well, bigger. :smileysad:

I guess the built in help will have to do.

Thanks again,

You have ready made help here 24/7 anyway, RonH.  :smileywink:

Allen,

Yeah, well I did a little homework before making the switch and tried to eliminate a few potential problems down the line. Hopefully I got everything right. As I said, NIS seems to be working fine.

As I told Floplot I already found that user guide... while doing my homework... but I was hoping for something a little more comprehensive. I guess those days are gone.

Thanks,

Hi brummie,

Thanks for the reply. That's interesting about NIS catching PDF viruses with the email scanner. Would that show up in the History dialog?

As you can tell, I'm still feeling my way around the software.

Anyway, it's good to know that things pretty much work the way they're supposed to "out of the box".

Hi delphinium,

Nice handle... I know someone in San Francisco who grows those.

Anyway... I appreciate the fact that you, and all the other volunteers, are here to help out. I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of your generosity.

Thanks,
