NIS compatibility with Windows 7, 8.1 and IE 11

Hi.

Will 8.1 work with 20.x?

If so, what about IE 11 that was just released for Windows 7?

I am assuming that the same rules would apply to 21.x as well.

Please let me know. Thanks.

Flavio

v20 works just fine with Win8.1 and IE11 ... Better actually (in my case) than v21 as far as ID Safe usability & workability, and definitely much better as far as the the IE, FF, & Chrome NTB add-ins are concerned.  Just be aware that both of the IE11 EPM settings must be disabled for the v20 add-ins to function.

Kind regards,

John

EPM= Enhanced Protected Mode, accessible via Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab, in IE.

Hi avjohnnie and F4E,

So then 21.x is fully compatible with IE 11, including the Norton toolbar? Don't have to worry about the EPM setting?

This is still true for the V21 products. It is the way the IE code is written that is not supported by many add on creators. Not a Norton fault.

Hi peterweb,

Thanks.

I would like to think that 21.x would turn off the EPM, but if you have a screeenshot (no rush) of the two EPM settings that I would have to disable that would be a great help.

Tnx and cheers!

Flavio :)

Flavio, Norton will not disable EPM in IE. You need to uncheck it in the Tools Menu in IE as described above. I would also turn off the Smart Filter in the same tab.

As F4E says, Norton will not change another program's settings. You need to do that yourself.

Here is a post from avjohnnie showing the 2 settings you need to change in IE11.

Peterweb,

Well done!

Flavio :)

Glad I could help.

I do not always remember where I see things. This time I got lucky.  :smileyhappy:

Just a quick question.  I don't use IE11, but I noticed that yesterday's Patch Tuesday cumulative security update for IE MS13-088 states that the update "disables Enhanced Protected Mode by default in Internet Explorer 11" - see KB2907803 for further details.

Does anyone know if both the EPP and 64-bit EPP IE settings shown here in avjohnnie's screenshot here are now automatically disabled in all EI11 installations for users that have applied the patch?

Kudo's to avjohnnie for posting the screenshot, and to peterweb for providing the link.

I wanted to add something I observed on both my laptop and desktop last week. They both have Windows 7 professional 64-bit, NIS 2014 version 20.4.0.40. I had that error that was reported by many people when opening my online vault for identity safe that a network/server error has occurred etc... I had just upgraded to IE 11 to see the functionality of a product which my users have. I also wanted to evaluate IE11 and how quick and glitch-free it was... I work in a computer support help desk FYI.  And I kept having off and on errors of either my vault password was incorrect or that network error in IE11.  As soon as switched back to Firefox (which is default browser) version 25, the vault started functioning perfectly right from the first try.  Just thought I would mention this.

If I understand you correctly, this may be due to the EPM of IE11?  In any case, I will probably still stick with Firefox but I will try IE11 with EPM disabled since I saw that I have the version 21 upgrade ready for my NIS.  Has anyone else had this problem with the vault but only in IE 11 and not in Firefox 25?

Just curious.

Also if you wish to continue using IE 11, you can disable Smart Filter as well, and in developer mode from the Tools tab, go to the bottom of the drop down menu to Emulation, and set user agent string mode to IE 10.

Note however - This is not a retainable IE11 option - not even across different tabs in the current browsing session.  Close the browser and the setting is forgotten.

Kind regards,

John

Hi Imacri,

I just read the KB2907803 and clicking on details, it is clearly shown that KB2888505 refers to what you said.

I've reset the advanced settings of IE11, rebooted the computer and the EPM is no longer checked.

I had to re-enable the NVP add on of NIS in order to be protected.

Thanks for the info you provided  :smileyhappy:

Sandro

Hi lmacri,

Thanks for that information!

@Sandro_cm,

Forgive me, but what do you mean by NVP having to be re-enabled. Thanks.

NVP is Norton Vulnerability Protection,  NIS add on to protect the browser, this is the component that doesn't work if EPM in

IE11 is enabled.

Hi Flavio_C

Instructions for enabling and disabling IE11 add-ons are posted here.  Note the comments at the bottom of that support article about Enhanced Protected Mode.

I use IE9 but the process to enable an add-on is similar for IE11.  I go to Tools | Manage add-ons | Toolbars and Extensions and click on Norton Vulnerability Protection.  If the status say "Disabled" then you should see a button to enable the add-on.

IE9 NVP Enable.jpg

If you can't find the Norton Vulnerability Protection add-on, go to the Show drop-down list and change "Currently loaded add-ons" to "All add-ons".
