NIS.exe uses 100% CPU as long as XP auto updates are on

Running Win XP on 2.6G machine with 2G ram.  Everything runs ok as long as I don't turn on windows update, which means I have no way to get XP updated.  As soon as updates turned on CPU goes 100% and stays there.  As near as I can tell the only solution is to go back to the 2012 version of the NIS program. or use a different internet security program.  Seems like so many people have a problem with NIS.exe or svchost.exe or ccsvchst.exe that somebody would find a solution.  Any and all help appreciated

It's actually a windows problem.

I'm not sure if it was ever fixed, I don't bother with automatic updates and I just run it manually after every patch tuesday.

I 'm using norton 2014 Internet Security.  Yes, it's the windows update you use.

Thanks

Thanks Dave.  Tried what was suggested on IE updates, but it didn't help.  Looks like microsoft hasn't got it fixed yet.  Guess I'll do what you do on updates.

The manual updates have been taking me a long time.  It sits there looking for updates anywhere from a half hour to an hour sometimes.

I think they are making things difficult on purpose to encourge people to upgrade the operating system since support ends in a few months.

Some good news.  Last nite I found MS has a new  update for IE and after installing everything is working again and the MS updates were found almost instantly and there was no high CPU usage.  This morning everything is still OK.  The update for IE 8   is KB2898785 released 12/6/13.  Sure hope it works for other people
