NIS Expiration Date

Dear users,

What happens with the expiration date of a key when you buy NIS for 3 computers activations and you only activate one?

Up to when can you activate the two other devices?

Arturo

Arturo - From what I've read on these posts, it doesn't matter if you only have one license or three licenses, once you activate that key, you have one year of use until that key expires.  I hope I'm not giving you the wrong information, but I'm sure others will say if I'm wrong.

PC_confused is correct.

Once a key is activated, the countdown clock begins and will be the same remaining time for all computers on that license, regardless of when the subsequent installations occurred.

PC-C....

Just for correctness -- there is only one licence that you buy and that one licence can have one or more Activations under it

But in practical terms what you said is perfectly correct. The clock starts running on the first activation., .

The answer is strange becuause I've installed in two computers with an interval of months and on the new machine it stated that I had the full 365 days of subscription.

Arturo

Hello Arturo,

I think you will find that once the newer installation synchronizes with the subscription servers, the date will reflect the time remaining as listed in your Norton Account.

If you mean you bought NIS and also NAV and installed one of them later that would be normal since the keys are not interchangeable and the clocks run independently

If you mean you installed one product -- say NIS -- and activated it on one machine say on 1 January  and then installed the same product with the same key on 1 February then both should expire on 1 January a year later (give or take a day or so depending on how Norton's clock works <g>)

If the second installation with the same key is expiring a month later ..... don't tell anyone!

I have a license for 3 PC's for 3 years; at any time can I update the license to add additional time?

If so, do I have to purchase a special license only meant for 3 PC's or will a single licence for a year be put towards all 3 PC's?

I'm not too sure how this works.

If you want to add more time before the time you have already paid for the straightforward way is to go online to the Norton website using one of the links at the top of the page and RENEW your licence.

When you RENEW it adds the new time automatically.

When you first buy Norton, you only buy one licence but with a certain number of activations (1, 3, 5, 10 are common) when you renew you have to get the same number of activations -- in your case a 3 PC licence but you can probably renew for more than one year at a time.

There is another way which is often a lot less expensive and that is to buy retail the same edition that you have now -- for 3 PCs -- in a store or online from a reputable source that are authorized distributors -- when it is on sale with good rebates and discounts.

Then you can use the new KEY that comes with the new version you bought and use it in effect to renew your present installation BUT when you do that it replaces any unexpired time so the trick is to wait until a couple of days before your present subscription is about to expire and use the new KEY then. It is true that we do get reports back from users that Norton's OnLine Support viw CHAT will add back in days if you lose them like that but I don't know that it is policy or a concession so I would not risk it unnecessarily.

You have not said what Norton product you have so be careful that you get an exact match.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the fast reply. :)

All 3 PC's are using NIS 2011.

So if I understand this correctly, if I buy through Norton's website, RENEWING will just be ADDING additional time and I won't lose any existing days. But buy from a retailer and those keys will wipe your existing license time. That's pretty intersting.

Also, I assume once I add a RENEWED license through Norton's website, all computers will eventualy sync up correct? Out of the three computers that have a license, one of them being my sisters... is on a laptop and she has spotty Wi-Fi. She live in Toronto, so I will be unable to update anything on her end. I assume her PC will get updated with the added time eventualy, correct?

Thanks for your help in this matter. :smileyhappy:

PS: I can't wait for NIS 2011!! :smileyvery-happy:

That's the way it is but as I said there is a workaround

It won't happen automatically unless you RENEW since if you use the NEW KEY route to save money she would have to enter the new KEY at the appropriate time.

I don't know for sure for Renewal although I think it would although the correct answer may depend on how it was installed on your sister's computer -- when it came to activate I think it would not have done so unless the MyNortonAccount was created on her PC using your email address and login password to match what you did -- otherwise it would have said that it was already in use and refused to activate.

I think the thing to do is to wait and see and for both of you to click on Support on the main screen and then click on Subscription Status. That should force a refresh and if hers was set up identically to yours then it should match for the renewal.
