No one?

If anyone has Firefox and NIS (any version) why don't you try logging in to Bravenet and see if the result is the same?

Go to www.bravenet.com, you can log in using "MufasaLosingGround" (a randomly generated username) with a password of "enterdome".

I've established this random username so anyone can try.. Please, post any results from replicating that ^ or any other thoughts here.

I tried it six times on Firefox 3.0.3.  I got in with no problems every time.  I tried it after closing and relaunching, and twice in a succession.  No problems ever.

My suggestion is upgrade Firefox to 3.0.3.  If that doesn't work, then uninstall Firefox completely, then reinstall it.

I have Firefox 3.0.3 - still can't log on. Uninstalled/Installed anyway, still doesn't make a diff.

Updated to the absolute latest Internet Security today, as well. It's the 2009, totally fresh with LiveUpdate.

Are there any other factors that could cause such a weird thing to happen?

I have Vista (no SP1) also if that is helpful.

Major, hi.

I ran this on my son's Vista Home Premium machine (ignore the sig data); so it doesn't appear to be an OS based problem.

His machine has

Vista Home Premium, SP1

NIS 2009

Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition, 2008

IE7

Firefox 3.0.3

Questions to ask yourself (and maybe share - :smileywink:)

What other problems have been happening on my machine?  [this can provide major clues when you are having a particular issue.]

What strange things have happened that I thought were fixed?  [for example, a crash during an installation or reinstall; some lockup that require C-A-D; strange messages.]

Other than the actual failings of a product, I've seen only three causes of the kind of problem you describe:

1.  security settings (they're everywhere -- everyone is trying to help you and they end up bumping into each other. Firefox has them, Windows has them, Norton has them, Spybot-S&D has them, even sites have them).

2.  artifacts left over from previous software (this is a big issue with me because it is the domain in which I have found the most serious problems.  I use SystemWorks' WinDoctor which is a fairly nonaggressive registry checker; but I have had to resort to some heavier duty ones for some problems - none I have 100% confidence in, so I won't recommend any in particular.  Check with other uses here.)

3.  program conflicts.  These are almost always blatant and easy to identify.  They will be mentioned on Google within minutes of the first occurrence (I exaggerate).  While annoying, they are almost always the easiest to deal with - someone patches something or you decide which product you like better.

Major, have you tried this?

For Firefox web browsers, please put your login info into the URL. For example:

ftp://username:password@ftp##.bravehost.com

Replace the ## with your ftp server number.

I should have said SOMETHING like this.

Lol, I really appreciate your help, but I dont even know what an FTP server is - or at least, I've never used one. My computer is basically brand new, about 2 months old, and I have never ever had any problems with it at all. I have had Norton Internet Security 2008 from the get-go, recently updated to 2009. I don't have any additional security software, logging in is fine on Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

Do you know specifically *what* settings could be culprits? Since I have never changed any of the settings, not majorly at least, there are no changes I should "reverse" to "bring back" Firefox to its working state. I can't remember if I have ever accessed Bravenet.com on this computer - I may have much earlier, but certainly not recently.

Thank you for your help! I have a feeling however that this will all lead nowhere, this is a ridiculous problem that makes no sense.

P.S. Also, I dont think any leftover software is causing an issue, as I simply bought my computer totally blank, added Firefox, Anti-Virus, E-Mail program, IM's, and have only updated each since I got them.

Sorry, Major, I was reaching for straws.  There is a way you can log straight in to an FTP site by typing everything (user name and password) into the URL.  I was hoping there was a way to do the same thing for an HTTP site.

Oh, I get it. Thanks for the suggestion.

See the thing is, not that I can't log in to the website; just that I can't log in using my favorite browser! Since Bravenet.com works problem free on IE and even Chrome, which I know has some components of Apple's and some components of Mozilla's.

I'd just prefer not to suddenly have to only edit my websites on IE or Chrome, while doing the rest of my browsing on Firefox, when apparently no one else has this issue. It's just a mystery.

Thank you for your help. I hope some other people have opinions too they could suggest.

I just logged in with no problems.

Thanks you guys. I think its obvious now to me that it definitely is just my computer and it seems to be isolated. I may try install/uninstall firefox TOTALLY again… do you know if this will delete my information like passwords and stuff? The first time I did this, I didnt uninstall it all the way because I wasnt sure what would happen.

If you are talking about the passwords, etc in Identify Safe, then you won't lose that by uninstalling Firefox.

If you are talking about all the security settings, etc, in Firefox, I don't know the answer, but my feeling is that I would not want to keep them anyway.  I would want to find out how Firefox works when it is starting fresh.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Firefox can become corrupt and slow after awhile. If your going to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it you need to Completely remove it. If you simply uninstall Firefox it leaves alot behind. Download and install Revo Uninstaller and use it in Advanced mode. After uninstalling Firefox reboot. You can install Febe plugin for Firefox to back up your bookmarks.extensions and themes prior to doing this. Also before reinstalling Firefox use a good registry cleaner to check for any leftovers.
