NIS System Tray icon missing

Anyone know why the URL Tim setup for the hotfix is not working?  It was working for me yesterday, but when I tried to use it again today for another PC, it is no longer working.  I still have the download on my first machine that I can use, but I'm curious to know whether there is another issue using this download.

By the way, the hotfix did fix the problem on my first PC.

All,

I'm looking in to why this page was taken down. I'll respond here when I get more information.

All,

This should be fixed shortly. It will take some time to replicate over all the servers. You should be able to see the document here for now - http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20100122121538EN

I just noticed that I have 4 instances of ccsvchst.exe running according to Task Manager.

I rebooted and checked again just to be sure..

I'm not sure if this is normal ( thought two was "normal") or if it has something to do with the hot fix.

Has anyone else had the same experience.

Hi,

After installing the Hot Fix and rebooting 4 times ,I have 2 instances of ccsvchst.exe running in Task Manager,The icon is visible now in system tray.

Regards

Sameer

Tim, have run the HotFix and I still have the same problem; NIS 2010 icon missing & program will not start from the start menu.  Have read through this entire thread and am experiencing the same issues as everyone else except I'm using Windows 7 (64 bit) OS.  ccsvchst.exe *32 process is running...

I would like to avoid having to use the Norton Removal tool as I'm also running Ghost 14.0 & NU 14.  Removing/reinstalling/reconfiguring all 3 programs would be an extreme pain in the @$$.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tim,

Thanks for the hotfix link on Wednesday.  I installed this fix and have NOT had any further issues.

Hello MoniBR,

Yes, this will support all languages. The Hot Fix is in English, but the components enclosed in the Hot Fix are not language specific.

Thank you! :smileyhappy:

NIS is working perfectly now.

Another time i had this missing tray icon today. I used this hotfix, and after reboot i see now NIS tray icon, but the same effect i usually get by restarting computer and logging to windows again. If i get this error next time, i will know that hotfix didn't help.

I will be in touch.

Anyone else with Windows 7 having this problem?  The hotfix did NOT work for me--the icon is still missing & I can't start the program from the start menu.  Have restarted after the fix 4 times without success.  NIS still seems to be running in the background (ccsvchst.exe running, Identity Safe works, etc.) but I can't start NIS!

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

bongo,

Have you checked "customize" for the system tray? In WIndows 7 which icons appear and when they appear is a user setting available when you click on the System Tray and select Customize in the popup.

I set both the Norton icons to always show icon and notifications.

Just something to doublecheck ....

It sounds like multiple issues might be involved.  Since the hotfix only resolves one of them, you might consider (once again):

a.  uninstalling NIS

b.  running the Norton Removal Tool

c.  downloading ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com and running it, using the registry tab and identifying and fixing all issues, then repeating this until no issues are left

d.  reinstalling NIS

e.  re-running the hotfix

I'm running Windows 7 64bit and the hot fix didn't work for me either.

However when I first start up the PC the Icon is there and some time later it disappears. I too am unable to launch the program from the desktop shortcut once its disappears.

A reboot normally brings it back though, just to disappear again later????

I would be grateful if some one could help........

The hotfix won't fix your scenario. It only fixes a case where the tray icon never appears after startup. You should start a new thread for your issue and include any ids from Errors  within your NIS or NAV Security History.

OK, I completely removed all Norton products (NIS 2010, NU 14, Norton Ghost 14) and reinstalled them.  Ran Live Update  and the hotfix for NIS and restarted about 3 times.  The icon showed up all three times, I could navigate, configure and use NIS & I thought everything was good to go again.  Alas, today I had to restart the computer and NO NIS icon!!!  After 2 more restarts, I still cannot bring up the icon nor can I start the program from the start menu.  ccsvchst *32 is running...

Something new this time around though: about 2-3 minutes after trying to start NIS from the start menu, the Norton One Click Support screen pops up with the following:

Error: "8504,106" after I install my Norton 2010 product

Screenshot.jpg

It suggests a restart and to run live update.  Well, that would be just dandy if I could ever start the program after a restart!!!

So I'm begging again; does anyone have any suggestions for me?  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and as mentioned above I'm also running NU 14 and Ghost 14.  Neither of the other two Norton products are giving me problems.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks for the information and the hotfix.

I had my first instance of missing icon in the system tray today.  Also, NIS (2010 17.5) would not open from the Start Menu. Both problems disappeared after reboot, nevertheless, I applied the hotfix.

It would have been helpful if the KB article indicated if the problem was limited to accessing NIS dialog screens or whether NIS was not functioning and therefore a security risk existed.

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100122121538EN

Could you please clarify whether there is a security risk with the issue?  I oversee six other 2010 NIS installations on XP SP3 machines and I need to determine if I should apply the hotfix to those machines, even if no problems have yet been reported.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Hi Scott,

The issue that the hotfix applies to was purely cosmetic and Norton was still fully functional. You do not need to apply the hotfix to any systems that are not displaying any symptoms.

Windows XP SP3

NIS 2010 17.5.0.127

after one week of headache, as the icon was there randomly at reboot, I discovered this discussion.

The hotfix seems to work at least for two reboots.

Thanks, but Symantec should provide us some aspirin!

Unfortunaly, the hotfix has not worked for me.

I am running Win 7 64bit

And NIS 2010 17.5.0.127

Norton tells me when I try to start it "Error: "8504,106" after I install my Norton 2010 product"

ccsvhost.exe*32 still runs in the background

What is the .DLL fix???
