There a few methods which you can use.
1) Install NIS 2009 "overtop" of your previous version. This method will retain some of your settings such as anti-spam.
- For this, merely download the NIS 2009 package to your desktop and double click to run it. Although this method should pick up you current activation key, be sure to have a copy handy in case it is needed.
2) The "clean install" method involves manually uninstalling your previous Norton product. This method will NOT save your anti-spam settings, however some folks prefer this approach
- Be sure you have a copy of your activation key in a safe place and / or create a Norton Account which will store your activation key.
- Download and save the NIS 2009 package to your desktop.
- Unplug from the internet.
- Uninstall NIS 2008 using Windows Add-Remove Programs. You should be prompted for a restart - please do so.
This next step should be performed ONLY if you do not have any other Norton Products on your computer which you intend to use in conjunction with NIS 2009:
- After the restart, again using Windows Add-Remove Programs, uninstall Symantec Live Update and Symantec Live Update Notifier (if present); these are not required for NIS 2009, however they may be required for other Norton Products.
- Perform another restart and then defragment your hard drive.
- Double click on the NIS 2009 package and the installation will begin.
- To complete the installation, NIS 2009 will ask for a connection to the internet - it is safe to plug back in now.
The activation process should automatically recognize your activation key; if not, you can enter your key manually. After NIS 2009 has installed, perform a manual "Run Live Update".
HiPhil_D
For me point number one worked,it picked up my key not a problem,I think there may be remnants of 2008 in the temp file but all is good.I have XP,sp3.The only panic I had was with the activation page took me awhile to work that out It showed an IE7 page I had IE6 so I just closed the page and hey presto all worked well.
Cheers Mo
Do I uninstall NIS 2008 before installing upgrade to NIS 2009. Will NIS 2009 be able to pick up that I already have a licence for NIS 2008 if I uninstall 2008 first? Also, if I install NIS 2009 two weeks before my subscription for NIS 2008 runs out will I get the two extra weeks on 2009

I've installed on top precisely because I wanted to keep my settings and in particular the white and black lists of the antispam settings built up over months of use.
Whether your unexpired two weeks is added onto your new subscription depends on just how you get the NIS2009 and pay for its subscription. I won't try to explain how that works out!
What you can do is to download the trial version of NIS 2009 and install it over your NIS2008. That will take over the unexpired two weeks and then when you get to the end of that subscription, buy a new one from the Symantec website and that will extend your expiring NIS2009 for the year plus any days.
If you have established a Norton Account for your NIS2008 -- which I strongly recommend -- it will have a record of your NIS2008 KEY and when it expires. Then even if you uninstall NIS2008 before installing NIS 2009 that KEY will be available -- if NIS2008 does not pick it up automatically then you should see an option Use an Existing KEY and that will take the old KEY.
Note that if you do install NIS2009 on top of NIS2008 it will take a very long time to uninstall NIS 2008 (mine took over 5 minutes to do this before it popped up Restart your computer to complete the removal so do not give up in dispair as I nearly did.
Uninstalling NIS2008 first using Remove Programs is the quickest and cleanest but you may want to offset that against losing settings.
Your decision <s>
There are several threads about this already if you look at them. For me and my preference its best to uninstall NIS 2008 then install NIS 2009. Your license will carry over as well as your subscription.
