Is it really true that NIS09 is really a big improvement over NIS08?

I know NIS08 was so much better than the last version I had tried (one that was using an older GUI, I can't remember really. I think it was from 2005?). But the scans are still rather slow, and they hog up so much CPU power it's agonizing. Has this been improved in 09? If it's actually good I'll try it out.

Hi CLLL,

Actually NIS 2009 is a huge improvement over 2008.

It is extremely light on system resources.

It does a lot of it's work in the background when your computer is idle.

It has more advanced and very intuitive scanning and detection techniques.

I could go on and on, but perhaps you should check out the detailed specifications page here.

You can confirm your eligibility for the FREE update here at the Norton Update Center.

Well, I will certainly have to give it a try. It does seem I could update to 2009 for free, but could this possibly leave any unneeded artifacts behind and so forth? Would a complete uninstall of 08 and then install of 09 be necessary? And I imagine, even after updating, I would still have to update my subscription?

NIS2008 gave me a lot of hope for Symantec, and I imagine 09 will have put you guys back in the ballgame. :)

Cheers.

Hi CLL,

Here is a recommended practice for installing NIS 2009:

Be sure you have a copy of your activation key in a safe place and / or create a Norton Account which will store your activation key.

Download and save the NIS 2009 package to your desktop.

Unplug from the internet.

Uninstall NIS 2008 using Windows Add-Remove Programs. You should be prompted for a restart - please do so.

After the restart, again using Windows Add-Remove Programs, uninstall Symantec Live Update and Symantec Live Update Notifier (if present); these are not required for NIS 2009. Also uninstall Norton Add-On Pack (if installed and still in your program list).

Perform another restart and then defragment your hard drive.

Double click on the NIS 2009 package and the installation will begin.

To complete the installation, NIS 2009 will ask for a connection to the internet - it is safe to plug back in now.

The activation process should automatically recognize your activation key; if not, you can enter your key manually.

After NIS 2009 has installed, perform a manual "Run Live Update". If a restart is required, please do so. Run again to be sure you have all current updates.

PMJI so soon after returning from vacation and without really catching up but I've just upgraded my NIS2008 to NIS2009 on XP SP3 using the download from the Norton main website and have a couple of comments.

Firstly, I hate to disagree with conventual wisdom on uninstalling first and if the user has a problem that may be desirable but if you uninstall you lose all your settings when you clean install (unless you use utilities to save and reinstall them) so since I'd been through the experience of losing all white and black list settings for anti-spam when I'd had to do a clean install and didn't know about utilities I decided today to upgrade on top of NIS2008.

It went well, although IMO very slowly since it took over 5 minutes to go from the first mention of "found existing installation and uninstalling it" to Restart and then actually beginning the visible install of NIS2009.

More important for me is that it kept all my white and black list entries. The only thing I had to remember was to go into the Settings and Configure the "Client Integration" by identifying Outlook Express as the email client.

Secondly, on the AntiSpam Add-on -- that is included in NIS2009 as standard. See http://www.symantec.com/norton/add-on-pack :-

<<  Norton Internet Security 2009 comes with integrated antispam technology delivering the same functionality. >>

I can support that this is correct and add the good news that if you have multiple users and use Fast User Switching you now get a Norton AntiSpam icon on the Outlook Express toolbar when you fast switch users and not just on the user you log onto first as happened up to and including 2008.

BTW If you need to access the excellent help in NIS 2009 on AntiSpam, note that you have to ask it about Spam and not Anti Spam ...

Hi huwyngr,

Since you used the overinstall method, can you check in your Add-Remove Programs and see if Symantec Live Update is still present?

Yes it is along with my desktop shortcut to LUALL.EXE "C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUALL.EXE"

Which is as it should be since although NIS2009 has liveupdate integrated the freestanding LiveUpdate that resides in Control Panel is used by other Norton applications, if you have them, and so should not automatically be removed.

At least that is my undestanding but I'm open to correction.

Hi huwyngr,

I believe you are correct that LiveUpdate is required for other Norton products and that should be clarified.

Uninstalling Live Update and Live Update Notifier should only be performed by users who are installing NIS 2009 and have no other Norton product which they intend to run in conjunction with NIS 2009.

Norton LiveUpdate is needed for Products like N.SW. and Ghost, e.t.c., because you will get Updates for them.

I would suggest un-installing LU., install N.I.S. 2009 and then re-install LU. - if needed - to avoid problems with LU. and N.LU..

I installed NIS09 and I am (expletive) impressed. It’s incredibly fast. The scans are also much quicker. Normally it would take maybe 5 hours for NIS08 to finish scanning my computer. It took less than an hour with 09, and it didn’t stick my computer’s feet into concrete either. There’s too many new features and improved features to list that I am impressed with. Good job Symantec. You certainly gained a customer back. :smileyhappy:

Wel some guy in Kaspersky Lab forums said that PCmag was baised and paid to spit out bias about Norton.

Yes, N.I.S. 2009 is much, much lighter than N.I.S. 2008 and your Scans will Run Quicker.  It also has Added Features which were not in N.I.S. 2008 to better-protect you.
