Hi there,
The /noresult switch was deprecated in 2007 release but it seems there is still some reference in the Help. Thanks for pointing this out.
If you want, you can try the /AUTOMATION switch which runs without any UI.
Let me know if this works for you.
Cheers
When I use the switch navw32 /a /automation it runs for about an hour (the time it usually takes to run) then freezes up my system. It happens whether it’s in it’s own batch file or part of my Auto_maintenance batch file. Without /automation it doesn’t freeze up my system but the results screen sits there waiting for me to close the window so the rest of my batch file can proceed.
Can you please e-mail me your batch file to try reproducing this? Also you run on XP SP2 correct?
Win XP SP3 all important updates 1GB DDR
Batch file (short version)
C:
cd "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus"
navw32 /a /automation
Your input is appreciated
Thanks!
I will let you know...
mtandy, how many drives do you have on your machine? Do you have any removable drives?
I had the same problem with a program that ran Norton Antivirus as an option after a download. The /noresult command line option worked fine until I upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2008.
I tried the /AUTOMATION command line option and no longer receive an error message. I don't know if the scan ran successfully because there is now no feedback via a splash screen.
I have 3 physical Hard drives
OS Games
A. partition C: NTFS D: Fat32 E: NTFS
swapfile data pictures
B. partition F: Fat32 G: NTFS I: Fat32
backups
C. partition H: NTFS
DVD-/+RW
DVD -/+R
Card Reader Q: R: S: T:
Ramdisk V:
Same configuration used with previous ver NIS 2003/04
smitty0527, as mentioned on one of the earlier posts, the /NORESULT switch has been deprecated. The /AUTOMATION switch should work for you, although it wouldn't give you any feedback. You can click View History on the left-hand side of the product UI, select the Scan Results view from there, and should be able to see a history of all your scans. The status would tell you what happened with a particular scan.
mtandy, thanks for the information. We haven't seen the freeze-up in our internal testing so far. If you are scanning all the drives on your computer, the scan will likely take a good amount of time to complete. During this time, you will not see any response on the command window. I just want to make sure that you are not calling this a freeze-up. If not, could you please describe your observation in this regard? Based on your response, I will probably have to work directly with you and gather some logs and/or process dumps to understand the problem better.
Thanks!

Thanks. Yes, I used the /AUTOMATION switch and the error disappeared. Your reply gave me the info I needed so I could look at the log and see if there was a problem. Thanks again for your prompt reply.
Winxp SP3.
When navw32 /a /noresult is placed in batch file (with other programs) it won't run (previous NIS 2004 ran perfectly).
When navw32 /a \noresult is placed in batch file (with other programs) it runs but \noresult is ignored causing batch file to "freeze" until scan window is mannually clicked on.
Need correct syntax to run from command line without putting results on screen (NIS2008 help says /noresult but it doesn't work.
Thanks,
mtandy
When the /automation switch is used are excluded items excluded or scanned?
Because the behavior I'm seeing matches what was happenning during a "full system scan" BEFORE I created an exclusion list.
Without the /automation switch it takes approximately 65 min to complete a full system scan.
With the /automation switch after 65min the red hard drive light goes out, the command line screen is there with a blinking cursor even after waiting significantly longer the screen doesn't change "exit", "quit", ""control"C", "Control+Alt+Delete" (Task Manager doesn't work), the "Start" button is also unresponsive. That's what I mean when I say my system freezes up".
The excluded items should still be excluded if using the /AUTOMATION switch.
Could you try one more thing and let me know what you find? Try running navw32.exe with the /AUTOMATION switch but without the /A switch separately on each of your drives (including the card readers and RAMDrive), as follows:
navw32.exe C: /AUTOMATION
navw32.exe D: /AUTOMATION
...and so forth.
Let me know if you see the freeze with any particular run.
Thanks!

I did the scans ae requested. NIS2008 locked up my system while scanning the NTFS partition that had the exclusions. These were *.wav *.tga *.sco or *.pak
E:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\Dat\ICO
E:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\Dat\SCP
E:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\Dat\SND\Clash
E:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\Dat\SND\Fairytale
E:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry\FCData
Although some of the files were consistantly problematic, the NIS2008 scanner locked up intermittantly on others leading me to believe there is a buffer/cache/stack over fllow component to this issue. There were times when just clicking on "files" in run a custom scan would lock up my system and I haven't even clicked on a file yet! Running a NIS2008 scan has been the only time my system has locked up in months. I built a rock solid solid system. By excluding these ENTIRE directories I was able to scan my system without incident. But now I believe my system isn't completely protected anymore because if a virus or other malware gets into on of these excluded directores it is safe from detection!

Sorry about the grammer in the previous post. But everytime I clicked "submit" I'd get "page is temporarily unavailable error" and of course I'd loose everything I just typed. This happenned about 10 times so I thought Symantec servers were down. But then when I tried to open my home page the same thing would happen. If I openned IExplorer from my desk top it would open but if I tried to go to another link from that page I'd get the same error. Even clicking on refresh produced the error. I signed off logged my user account then logged back in as an administrator, openned Iexplorer logged on to the forum replied to your message (for the 11th time!) and when I clicked on submit NIS2008 openned up a window that said "...is trying to connect to the internet "block this program-reccommended" of course I said allow and submitted the message. When I signed off I checked NIS2008 logs it showed 10 entries of "user blocked this instance of Iexplorer" my point is when I was surfing the internet as a "limited User" (my normal way to surf do to the increased security it provides) NIS2008 AUTOMATICALY BLOCKED iexplorer without asking for input. NIS2008 only asks for input from "administrator accounts". It did this even though I created a firewall rule for iexlorer to "always allow" because it had done this previously when 1st installed (the same EXACT thing happenned with Outlook Express. I couldn't get my email for days until I figured out what NIS2008 was doing).
Back to the original topic, to clarify a point
*.tga *.wav *scp & *.pak are file extensions located in the directories illustrated. Both Chessmaster 10th Edition & Far Cry are from Ubisoft & Ubisoft/Crytek
Please help

PMJI in the middle of a complex situation but I just happen to have been dealing with something that might relate and be useful.

I wonder if it would be worth checking to see what would happen when in one of the limited user accounts you invoked Run as Administrator for iexplore.exe -- for example right mouse click on the IE icon on the Quick Launch bar -- if you have that -- and click on Run as Administrator on the context menu?
Perhaps then you would invoke the request for input, if that is your goal?
Forgive me if this does not relate but I've just been dealing with the Compatibility Wizard in VISTA and it's interesting since it tells you a bit more about what you are doing than the Compatibility Tab in a file's Properties does.
Today once again while in Outlook Express & clicking on view message (Symantec Forum) the error "page not available" appeared AGAIN (previously my first action was as an administrator to UNcheck "automatically configure known programs and change it to "ask me first" which had no affect also remember yesterday I temporarily changed this from a Limited user account to an Administrator account which had the desired effect of NIS2008 opening a window and asking me if I wanted to BLOCK-recommended or allow Iexplorer to connect to the internet I said at that time ALWAYS allow.
So when it happenned yet again today......
I closed Outlook Express - I tried to open Iexplorer directly to get to my Home Page - SAME ERROR Page Unavailable .
I signed off my Limited user account - signed on my Administrator account - opened NIS2008 - deleted the firewall rule for Iexplorer - created a custom rule to allow Iexplorer to always allow communicaton to and from any computer any port (I hope I didn't weaken my protection by doing that) - saved the changes - rebooted the computer (to make certain the changes took effect) - logged on in my Limited user account and clicked on view message (from Symantec in Outlook Express) - SAME ERROR Page Unavailable again _ I logged off my Limited UserAccount - logged on my Administrator Account added my Limited User Account to the Administrator Group - logged back into my regular account but now with administrator privileges - clicked on view message and INSTANTLY a window opens up "Iexplorer is trying to connect to the internet using an unknown module recommend BLOCK" - once again I clicked on always allow just like I did yesterday. (and why are there only 2 choices always allow or Block this instance how come allow this instance only appears if the window keeps reappearing 3 times in quick succession?) - only then was I able to connect to this forum.
Have I weakened my protection by allowing Iexplorer to always communicate to or from any computer any port?
Why are there only 2 choices always allow or Block this instance how come allow this instance only appears if the window keeps reappearing 3 times in quick succession?
How come NIS2008 doesn't listen to its' own firewall rules? (to ALWAYS allow Iexplorer to communicate....etc)
Why does NIS2008 automatically "Block" input for programs in Limited User Accounts but ask for input in Administrator Accounts?
Please help
mtandy
Today Monday when I tried to send email (from my Limited User Account Outlook Express repeatedly created an error message "unable to find host" I opened Iexplorer surfed for awhile and tried again to send email from Outlook Express this time it worked. I closed all programs - logged off my Limited User Account - logged on to my Administrator Account and checked the NIS2008 Firewall logs here is a direct quote "6/16/2008 10:38:38 am This one time, the user has chosen to "block" communications.
Outbound TCP connection.
Remote address, service is (mail.bellsouth.net,pop3(110)).
Process name is "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".
NIS2008 did not ask for my input. It just went ahead and blocked me. Again.
Background: Before I joined Symantec community Forums I spent many hours with Symantec Techsupport because these problems started the day I installed "NIS2008" & "Systemworks 2008" 3 different "techsupport personnel" uninstalled then reinstalled the programs causing me to loose my configuration setup and exclusions causing me to start all over again each time. Once after a 3 1/2 hour techsupport session the tech said he would schedule me for a "call back" in 2 1/2 hours. It never came. One techsupport person told me to call the "Symantec Internet Department".
Please Help me,

mtandy, did you see the freeze both when using the /AUTOMATION switch and when not using it to scan the partition with the exclusions? Although you might not be scanning these excluded locations, you can still expect to be protected if you have the Auto-Protect feature turned on. Do you have this feature enabled (it is enabled by default)?
On the other issue with blocked applications, my first question would be on how your NIS Firewall is configured. Do you have it configured to "Automatically decide what to do [recommended]" or "Ask me what to do"? Do you have any of the advanced options - "program launch monitoring" and "program component monitoring" turned on and configured?
