Hi Mike_H
It might help to have all computer running the most recent version of NIS which is 15.5.0.23. If you need it you can get it here.
If you are leary of that then try just one or two and report back.
I have also attached a link to a previous printer / file sharing issue thread which deals with Vista, but should also work with XP.
I think you will find your best results when all computers are running 15.5.0.23.
Phil_D,
I wish I could say that did the trick, hell I wish I could say it was no worse. It has been a long afternoon of yet more upgrades and restarts. All 4 PC's now running the same version 15.5.0.23. If anything I would have to say that the problem is certainly no better and may be worse. Comp #3, wirelessly connected, had not been giving me any problems but now it will no longer share files and printers as comp #4 was and still is. The first sign of trouble was during the discovery phase of the remote monitoring set up after all the upgrades had been installed, the two wired computers saw the other 3 but one of the wireless, comp #3, would not see the other wireless comp #4.
Its too late for specifics, I'll try to sort out what is doing what to which tomorrow and let you all know.
Thanks for the suggestions, I believed it to be the right thing to do too.
Phil,
Right now all seems to be working but I don't know why. Working strictly on comp#3 today I did ten shut downs and 10 starts(not 10 restarts). On half of them the file/printer sharing was not working but I could get it to work by editing the computer in the network view screen. First I would give it "Full Access" click okay then immediately change it back to "Shared". I could not get it to work as I had before, by "Restricting" then "Trusting" the network in the personal firewall. After walking away for a few hours (to grocery shop) I came back to find both wireless computers(the ones that were having the problems)and both wired computers were now able to file and printer share. I opened NIS on all four and disabled the Remote Monitoring on all (because it hadn't set up properly the last time I tried to do it). Next I set up the remote monitoring all over again and each computer was found.
For the moment everything seems to have settled down. Just wish I knew why.
One last point of information: the wireless computers are also set up with the NIS Parental controls add on as these are my kids computers. The kids use these computers as a restricted user in windows and there were times when they could print and file share but I as the administrator could not. All I can say is; what is up with that?
Should the problem reappear I'll let you know but for now it looks like getting everyone on the same version was the right thing to do.
Thanks.
Mike_H,
I'm glad to hear that everything is now working. That is good news.
I apologize that I forgot to mention earlier that going out shopping for a while is an important step! Don't know where my mind was.
If you have any other issues, you know where to find us.
Best Wishes.
Well that was short lived as I thought it might be. Just checked my network map and even though computer#4 was up and online it was showing as off on the map. Again on that computer I had no file or printer sharing. On that computer I logged off the user and did a restart. No change. Neither of the two windows user accounts, one restricted one administrator, had printer or file sharing. From the administrator account I again "Restricted" then "Trusted" the only network showing. No change. Next I went to the Norton Network map (still on computer #4) and edited the Network Details. I changed the setting from "Shared" to "Full Access" then back to "Shared" again. File/printer sharing was restored to both user accounts.
Any thoughts for a more permanent solution?
Hi Mike_H,
Could you private message me your contact info and I can try and help you out here. I'd also like to get a clearer picture of your current setup.
Thanks,
Matt
Matt,
Private messaged you a phone number call at your convenience.
Thanks,
Mike
Matt,
Thanks a million for your interest in and help with, this problem. Although it is still unresolved, your troubleshooting techniques were valid and certainly do indicate that the problem is either with the wireless section of the network or within windows. I will hard wire the most troublesome computer to see what happens.
Regardless of the outcome, I will take your reco and try NIS 2009 soon; and I'll be renewing my subscription when it is due!
Thanks again,
Kudos to you,
Mike_H
Maybe someone can help with a similar problem...
I have a wireless network setup with 4 computers and one server, as well as a sometimes used laptop. Several of the computers are older Dells and some are newer, and we decided to upgrade to NIS 2008 and Systemworks bundle. I spent a weekend installing, scanning, updating, etc. However, after the install, two of the computers were running EXTREMELY slow. For the sake of productivity, we decided to uninstall NIS and Systemworks on the slowest computer, and now several days later, we are having very random networking problems. The computer withough norton (A), now is no longer accessible by other computers. I get a message that I'm not allowed access. I can see it on the newtork but not access files or printer sharing. Also another computer has become inaccessible as well (D), but it still has norton. I've tried all troubleshooting I can, and am now considering uninstalling Norton on all computers, because I can't figure out how to fix it. My fault, I did not realize that several computers are not strong enough to run Norton, which explains the slow running.
I guess what I'm wondering is if a computer without norton should still be able to network with those that do? Would it help to go to each computer with Norton and open systemworks, and give each computer full access (unrestricted) in the network map? I did try this with one computer, but it didn't seem to help. So I didn't bother to do this with all computers. Also, is there a way to install only the most necessary components so that I can run it faster with the older, less powerful computers?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Oh, I do have a laptop that I sometimes use to see the network, and it has a built in network diagnostic, which when run on the computers I can't access, gives me a message that that computer was pinged, but no response was received. I'm not sure what to do with this information, though.
Thanks!
Hi alexiatran,
Please see this post which although relating to Vista has valuable information about configuring the NIS 2008 firewall to network computers using NIS and non-NIS.
You might also consider updating to NIS 2009 as it is much lighter on system resources and has very intuitive scanning techniques.
At the Norton Update Center you can confirm your eligibility for the FREE update to NIS 2009 with your current 2008 subscription.
Hope it helps.
Thanks Phil!
I'll try it asap, and let you know if it helps.
Phil,
I tried setting the firewall controls as suggested, but the problem is not resolved. I think the article is suggested to turn off all firewalling. Is this recommended/safe?
Hi alexiatran,
Part of the post referred to turning off all firewalls ( while unplugged from the internet) only as a test to determine if it was a Norton issue or a router, network or computer issue.
Are you still using NIS 2008 or did you update to 2009?
Hi alexiatran,
I'd like to try and help you out here. I read your first post several times and want to be sure I understand the situation. Here is my understanding:
1. Several systems on the network
2. System A does not have NIS and other systems cannot see this system in regards to file/printer sharing
3. System D has NIS but other systems cannot access this system
I have several questions as follows:
1. What type of router is being used?
2. Are all systems connected to this router?
3. How many systems in total are on this network? What OS is on each System? Which systems are wired and wireless? Which ones have NIS and which ones do not?
4. What is the IP address and subnet of each system behind the router? Please run "ipconfig /all" from each system via cmd prompt and private message me the results
5. On System A, can you check if file/printer sharing are enabled? Can you also check to see if the Windows Firewall is enabled?
6. On System D, can you tell me what trust setting you are assigning to each of the other systems on the network from System D's network map? Have you tried assigning "Shared Trust" to the other systems from System D's network map?
Please feel free to private message me the results of the ipconfig test and I will be more than happy to help you out.
Thanks,
Matt
Thanks.
I will try to upgrade since my subscription is new, but it's a lot of headache and time, since it's for 5 total computers, and with all the networking issues, I need a whole weekend to make sure it's up to speed before Monday open.
I'll let you know.
Thanks Matt,
First, your understanding is correct. It's been a bit random, with the network sharing going in and out regarding access to various shared locations.
Answers to your questions:
1. ATT 2wire 3800HGV-B
2. Server is wired directly, all others have Linksys wireless WMP54G to connect to the one router
3. 5 total systems, including server are connected, but I sometimes use my laptop to connect, all run XP except laptop which runs Vista, the only one without NIS is "D" because I uninstalled it after it ran too slow and I realized it did not meet minimum system requirements (several systems are a bit older and need to be replaced soon).
4. will message you info
5. Yes to both
6. I've check that all computers are set to trust eachother in the network map (those that have NIS)
You should know that since I've been troubleshooting all this, I came across this article that might be the root of my problems. Here's a link http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-22_11-5563928.html When I installed NIS originally about a week ago, I was doing them simultaneously, and I may have also updated XP SP from 1 to 2 during the process. I didn't realize it may cause all this difficulty. Let me know if you think this may actually be the problem rather than NIS. If so, do you think I can install it, or upgrade to 2009, or install only the most necessary components on the older computers, possibly "D"?
Thanks for your help
Hi alexiatran,
I reviewed your ipconfig results and everything looks good. I see nothing in there to indicate why you are experiencing issues. I did read the link you provided and while I don't have first hand experience seeing wireless connectivity issues when upgrading from sp1 to sp2, I can appreciate there may be something to it. However, if the issue you are experiencing is ONLY related to file/printer sharing and NOT network connectivity, I don't think the article would help. If you are experiencing network connectivity issues as well, then it definitely wouldn't hurt to follow those directions and see if it resolves the issue.
Also, what could be playing a part here is the Windows Firewall. On the systems with NIS, please ensure the Windows Firewall is disabled. This way we are only dealing with the NIS Firewall and if all systems are set to Shared Trust by all NIS systems, you should really be able to connect to a file and printer share. On the system without NIS, in the Windows Firewall you should see an Exceptions tab. Under this you should see a "File and Printer Sharing" option. Try checking this so it will not be blocked or filtered through the Windows Firewall. However, this does present an element of risk.
Another thing you can try is pick a system with NIS. On this system, set a remote system to Full Trust. Now go to the remote system, launch a cmd prompt and run "Ping [IP address of NIS system]" If you receive a reply that is a very good start. Then, on the remote system, go to Start-->Run and type \\[name of NIS system] If you are prompted for a user/pass and you can login, this again is a great sign. Now check to see if you can access the file share. If yes, now change the Trust Level from Full Trust to Shared Trust, reboot the remote system and again try to go to \\[name of NIS system] You should be able to.
As for NIS 2009, I believe you should be able to download the trial version from Symantec's website here. After you install it, it will pick up your current NIS 2008 subscription and you should be good to go. I'd highly recommend this even outside of the issues you are seeing just because it is a much faster product and has more features.
Also, when installing NIS, there is no option available to pick and choose which components you would like to install. So, for those systems that were running slow, you may indeed need to upgrade them at some point. Although, perhaps you can give NIS 2009 a try on these systems.
Hope this helps,
Matt
