I've recently upgraded to NIS2011 from Norton SystemWorks 2008 and, for the most part, I'm very pleased with it and it has definitely solved a problem I was experiencing.
I'm using Windows XP Home Edition with SP3.
I used NSW2008 for a considerable period of time and continually wondered why the Windows Security Center service was being turned off. It was only after I did a Google search that I found information about a setting in the application that enabled me to fix the problem.
I am now finding that NIS2011 appears to be doing the same thing, except that I cannot find any setting to change.
Does anyone know if there is a setting in NIS2011 that turns that service off?
Yes, normally NIS will disable security center alerts because they are considered to be a duplication of similar notifications that Norton will display. However, like you, I prefer the redundancy, because if Norton should silently crash, the only notice you would get would be from Windows Security Center. So, open the Security Center and look at the left-hand pane and click "Change the way Security Center alerts me." This will give you the options to reenable alerts for the firewall and antivirus.
Thanks for your comments, Norton Fighter. The "Change the way Security Center alerts me' option was greyed out in the Security Center page available to me at the time so I had to manually start the service, which I successfully did.. When I went back to the "official" started Security Center page, which had become available, I discovered that Windows could not find any antivirus software on my system. One of the options in the "Change the way Secirity Center alerts me" is to turn off the message which informs if the antivirius software is either not installed or out of date but doing that seems to me to be defeating the object of the exercise.
I'm now confused as to what is going on. Why can't Windows find NIS2011 for starters? There is no doubt that it's all working for me.
Well, it looks as if this problem has fixed itself; at least when I've checked over the past few days the Security Center has always been turned on at boot-up -- as was this morning -- and I'm now continually being informed that NIS2011 is being detected by Windows.
Why that didn't happen in the first place I'll never know.
