NOF installed but not working

I recently re-Installed NOF on my sons of running  XP and set up time limit restrictions  as well as a set number of hours per day. However none of it has any effect on his pc. In fact when I check the rules on his of it will actually say "you've gone over your time limit" but no warnings to that effect come up on screen and his pc isn't locked.

Ive been using the sw for  several years and it's worked fine so cannot understand why it's no longer ok. I have re-installed 3 times using the norton removal tool but get the same results. When I log in on my pc I can still see sites that are beiviewed we'd but the time is always 1 hour behind despite the time being correct on both pc's.

Please help as my son belives he has carte Blanche to use his pc whenever he wants now.....

Keep on installing & un-installing with Norton removal but still no success  - Norton IS 2012 is also installed so I've had to keep on re-installing this as well.

Looking through other comments on this forum it appears that other people are having trouble with newer versions of NOF - could this be an issue? - if it is then its a fairly major one.

Right now I'm out of options bar re-installing Windows which I would rather avoid....

One further point - when this was working for my son it gave unlimited warnings that his time was up, however it never locked the PC, all he had to do was click OK and carry on till the next warning - annoying for him but no more than an inconvenience - is this the way it should be??

OK - this is getting worse...

For no apparent reason the NOF is no longer running on my sons pc - he assures me that he's not touched it & I beleive him.

I've uninstalled & re-installed & appears to be working on his PC but shows no internet activity at all - I know thats not the case because I've visitied several sites on his PC using Google Chrome.

The NOF icon appears on his pc & states the amount of time left & house rules etc but part from thatits not working at all!!

HELP!!!!

Hi dellboy67,

You mentioned "I've visited several sites on his PC using Google Chrome...." Did you log onto the PC as your child (using his Windows account?

Have you tried other other browsers, like IE or Firefox (The program supports Chrome.  I'm just curious to know if other browsers make any difference).

Thanks,

Katie

Hi Katie

I was using his Windows acct but only in Chrome which has always worked before, however I will try FF & IE as well & report back what I find.

dellboy67,

Thanks for the update.

Thanks,

Katie

Well, looks like its miraculously started working again with no intervention....

However a few things are still not right;

Time is still reporting an hour behind (ie if my son visits a website @ 8.30pm the NOF reports it as being @ 7.30pm)

When the time restriction kicks in it does so at the correct time, however even though i've set it to lock the PC it only gives a warning with an ok button & allows him to carry on - completely pointless!

Please let me know how i can fix these 2 issues.

dellboy67,

I assume you have the time and region set up correctly on the PC and also you have the Time Zone set up correctly for your Norton Online Family account.  Can  you please let us know what state you are in?

When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would get an extra 60 seconds plus another 60 seconds while displaying a warning message with 60 seconds counting down.  After that,  the child is logged out of his/her account.  The child is allowed to log back to the PC for 60 seconds and receive another warning message with 60 seconds counting down to finish whatever he/she was doing .  Later, the behavior is repeated for the 3rd time,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password of the Norton Online Family account.

Thanks,

Katie

I've had the exact same problem for ages, almost as long as I've had Norton. I went to the chat and had someone screenshare. It fixed it for about a day and now it's back to the same thing. She gets a warning but can somehow keep going anyway, for an unlimited amount of time.

Time  & Region are set correctly on both my sons & my own PC - we are both in the same region (UK on GMT).

I've just logged on to his pc now & NOF stated firstly that he had run out of time (strange since he's been out at school all day & hasn't used the PC at all), secondly it stated that NOF required a restart of the PC which I did. however when the PC has restarted the NOF is not in the system tray so I'm thinking its not installed?

When the "run out of time" box appeared it was easy just to ignore it - the PC was certainly not locked even after about an hour after the first warnings appeared. the software used to be a lot better than this so I can't understand why its now gone downhill & is VERY soft & flakey...

I've tried blocking named sites to see if they're blocked but it allows ANYTHING -so it seems as soon as he shuts down & restarts the PC the NOF is no longer working, incidentally I'm not getting an email alert about it either. Also just checked the log & its not recording any of the websites I've been on in the last half hour...

Please help - looks like others are having similar problems as well, incidentally Im not getting any emails when someone replies to my posts even though I have the box ticked - looks like this site is having a few problems at the back end as well...

Incidentally where is the setting in NOF for time zone???

dellboy67,

You can find the time zone online at Manage Account -> Time Zone.

What version of Norton Safety Minder is installed on the machine?

What Operating System is running on the machine?

Thanks,

Katie

Ok time zone is correct - GMT 0.00 I’m assuming this would automatically detect DST as we are British Summeryime right now.

My sons PC is Windows Xp fully up to date. Using latest version of NOF.

dellboy67,

Can you please send me a private message in the forum and let us know your Norton Online Family email address?

Thanks,

Katie

Any updates on this please -its’driving’me’mad!!!

Still no update on this problem - please could I have answer soon as this has gone on for too long.

Thanks

Just a thought - when NOF tracks the time usage does it also include time when the PC is in sleep mode?

Hi dellboy67,

Which option do you have at Settings -> Time online?

Count the total amount of time XXX is logged onto the computer

or

Count only the amount of time XXX actively used the computer

Thanks,

Katie

I have amount of time actively using the computer set. However this is only part of the problem, the other part is still that even after the curfew time has long gone past he can still use the pc - it never becomes locked down…
