Norton 2008 - Runtime Error R6025

Auto_Addict, thanks for the additional information. If ccSvcHst.exe isn’t running under the user name, I can understand why Outlook won’t work. You probably also are missing a Norton icon in the tray (or if you move your mouse over it it goes away.) When in that state, you have to log off and back on again. This has given a little more insight into the issue for us.

If this is the issue, Microsoft has a fix or two for it.  It has been a constant problem for years -- the hidden icon.  I don't have the link, but I can verify it works; you'll just have to do a little searching.  I used to do the log on/log off/log on; and although it really worked, I have to tell you that it got old fast.

However ...

I am surprised that this happens to the second user.  I only experienced this problem as the first person to boot up.

Sorry to disapoint, but the Norton icon was not missing from the tray, nor did it disapear when I hovered over it.

Everything was fine when I logged off and back on again.

I'd suggest switching to Norton Internet Security 2009. A lot of old issues aren't issues any more.

You can go here (Symantec Store - Trialware) and download the trial version, which is the retail version without your key. When you install it, it will pick up the key to NIS 2008 and become your regular version.

I like the product and will be recommending it to my clients, as well as using it for the rest of my family.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply, but I've only just upgraded from 2007 to 2008 when my subscription expired.

Should I not wait to see if reese can find an answer?

If I did download 2009, would I lose my subscription? I've just paid for 2 years, about a month ago.

No problems today, Thursday 11th.

AA, you shouldn't lose your subscription.

Thanks for the link, but surely 2009 uses ccSvcHst.exe, and if so it may not eradicate my problem.

Before I update, should I not wait for reese to come back with a possible solution?

So far, nobody is familiar with this issue and the next step would be to get some forced crash dumps from you. ccSvcHst is simple a wrapper application that has a lot of components to it. I suspect that the problem isn't with ccSvcHst itself but in one of the components. That's what I've been trying to isolate without much success. Moving to the 2009 product probably will solve your problem but if it doesn't, it'll certainly be easier to focus on determining the problem.

If I download Norton Internet Security 2009 - 15 Day Trialware I definately will not lose my 1 year 335 days subscription?

Correct. If you install Norton Internet Security 2009 over your current version of NIS, it will "pick up" your existing subscription on that system.

Ok Downloaded 2009

Message 'A necessary file could not be loaded - PIF:alerteng.dll' - also got Runtime Error R6025.

Ran fix - re-booted got same messages again.

Re-installed 2009.

Installed OK

Re-start

Same error messages at log on, but 2009 running.

....................

Just noticed,

2 versions of Norton running 2007????? and 2009.

2 versions of ccSvcHst.exe running under SYSTEM

None running under my ID.

Logged off and on.

Same alerteng.dll message

2 versions of ccSvcHst.exe running under SYSTEM

2 versions of ccSvcHst.exe running under my ID

Auto_Addict, since you were having problems before, it probably would've been best to unistall 2008, run the Norton Removal Tool, and then install the 2009 product. Can you uninstall 2009, run the removal tool, and then install 2009 again? I suspect that your problems will be solved. If problems continue, it looks like we have something a little more tangible to research this time.

Will do.

That's better.

Thanks for your help, everything seems to be working, apart from I no longer have Norton anti-spam in Outlook.

Won’t be able to check it for a couple of weeks as I’m going on holiday:smileyhappy:

Auto_Addict, I’m sorry about my slow response, I’ve been out of town this week. I’m glad that you got it to work! I suggest that you start a new thread for your anti-Spam issue. If you have any more issues feel free to let us know.

Just to put the kybosh on the so-called solution, my dad's computer has been suffering the same problem with the same associated error messages, and I get a little miffed when upgrades to products are continually sold on their predecessor's failings.

Computer starts OK, then on logging in we get the message telling us there is a runtime error with (path)ccSvcHst.exe and a code R6025 - pure virtual function call.

On running task manager, there is only one instance of ccSvcHst running under system and the big Norton label icon is missing from the toolbar; it normally sits just to the left of the system tray.

Live Update run regularly and twice on my visit - NIS up to date.

Visited Symantec's website and ran the sugested solution of searching for hosts and rpawinet.dll and a virus check - all with no success. Many internet searches lead here.

It seems to be working now, but the way in which it did was in looking for the version number. I opened up NIS 2008 from the Start menu, selected Help and Support from the menu at the top right and after checking connectivity, a Help and Support window arrived. I then selected AutoFix and after about 15 seconds it told me I had a problem; after about another it told me it was with the subscription, although this clearly states the correct time remaining on the opening screen of NIS. So, AutoFix is still running, and after 4 instances of a window titled RegSvr32 with the message "DllUnregisterServer (path)SymXPep2.dll succeeded" popping up, the Norton icon and 2 instances of ccSvcHst.exe in the Task manager arrived. So far so good.

If there are any further developments I will post them here but in summary it would appear that there was somehow a problem with the subscription side of things that stopped NIS from loading correctly.

About 1 in 4 times when booting after power on I get the R6025 without the big yellow Norton icon (and without any option to submit an error report). Norton icon doesn't appear. So I go Start/Turn Off/Restart and it reboots - always (so far) OK. This has been happening for a couple of months or thereabouts.System is XP, auto updates enabled for both Symantec and XP. Have recently installed full version Registry Mechanic and cleaned up the system - no difference. Just one user on this system, so no switching.
