I have been experiencing the following message when Norton 2008 loads

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error
Program:C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe
R6025 - Pure Virtual Function Call

On reading the Microsoft Knowledge Base on this error they suggest it may be a program error:-

Here is the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/125749/en-us

I have contacted Symantec 5 times now, through their Chat, and the latest comment is that I should contact Microsoft!

As this matter is nothing to do with a Microsoft product, I am at a loss as what to do next.

Any guidence would be appreciated.

Auto_Addict, can you clarify when this occurs? You indicated on startup, is this on right after you boot the machine? Do you have a tray icon after you are logged in? In task manager there are usually two instances of ccSvcHst running, one as system and one as you, do you see both and if not, which one is missing? If there is an option to see advanced details of the error, can you provide those as well?

Also, please check what version you are actually running. There are two 2008 versions, 15.0 and 15.5. You can see this in the help about screen.

Lastly, please manually run all LiveUpdates to make sure that everything is updated.

Hi Reese

Thanks for your reply.

The machine boots up OK, but, and not every time, when either myself or my wife log on we can get this runtime error.

The version of Norton I am running is 15.5.0.23.

I run Live Update maually, every moring when I log on, it is totally up to date.

I have a tray icon.

As far as I can see I have 2 versions of ccSvHst.exe running, one says System, and the other says Network Service.

I cannot replicate the error, it happens from time to time.

I'm sorry, don't quite understand the question.

Hope this helps.

Auto_Addict, thanks for the additional information. It looks like everything is good, but you're still having the problem, unfortunately.

ccSvcHst has a lot of parts to it and it can be very difficult to identify which portion is causing the problem with the little bit of information that you've provided. I hoping that we could get some more detailed information information from the crash screen, such as the faulting module and its address. When it does crash, do you get the opportunity to submit this to Microsoft? If so, and you do, do you get a bucket or issue identifier? Immediately after the crash has occurred, do you still have the tray icon and both copies running

Unfortunately no, I only get the error message.

I still get the tray icon, and Norton seems to be working OK, I can still run live update and do a scan.

The next time it happens, I will check to see if I have both copies running, and report back.

Again, because I cannot replicate the problem, I don't know when it will happen next, it could be tomorrow, or even next week.

If I re-boot after the problem, it loads OK.

One point, when I upgraded to 2008 from 2007, after I did the download, and then install, I had this error message.

I presumed then, there must have been a problem with the download, so I un-installed it, and re-downloaded it again. The second install ran OK.

I only upgraded a couple of weeks or so ago.

Just a thought, as my machine is not networked, is there a way to stop the network version running, or would that be a red herring?

No, the “network version” is a little misleading. That is just the access rights that it needs and has nothing specific to do with the network. Both versions need to be running for different reasons. We’ll await your feedback when this occurs again.

Hi reese

I booted up this morning, logged myself on, ran Live Update, went into Task Manager :-

ccSvcHst.exe is running under my username

ccSvcHst.exe is running under SYSTEM

Logged on under my Wifes ID, again, went into Task Manager:-

ccSvcHst.exe is running under my wifes username

No sign of ccSvcHst.exe running under SYSTEM

No runtime error message this morning.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the additional information and you are seeing what I would expect. What do you see after the crash has occurred?

Auto_Addict, I’m sorry, but I mis-read your previous message. I always expect to see a copy of ccSvcHst running as SYSTEM regardless of who is logged in. If I interpret this correctly, you didn’t get any crashes or runtime errors between your log in and your wife’s log in, yet the ccSvcHst running as SYSTEM disappeared. I’ve never heard of that before. Things aren’t quite adding up and much as I hate suggesting it, it may be time for an uninstall and re-install of the product.

Hi reese

Thanks for your reply.

Tried a several different tacks this morning.

1. Booted up.

 Logged on as my wife.

 Ran Live Update.

ccSvcHst.exe running under my wifes log in & system.

switched user, logged in a Me, ccSvcHst.exe running under me, but not System

ccSvcHst.exe System still running under my wifes log in.

2. Shut down the machine.

 Logged on as Me

 Ran Live Update.

ccSvcHst.exe running under My log in & system.

switched user, logged in as my wife, ccSvcHst.exe running under my wife, but not System

ccSvcHst.exe System still running under my log in.

Tried both options again, without running Live Update, same result!

No runtime error message this morning.

I take on board what you are saying, but the product has been re-installed twice now.

Thanks for the update Auto_Addict.

I'll do some more research. The behavior that you're seeing may just be an artifact of how Task Manager works.

If you see the crash again, feel free to let me know and provide as much detail as you can/want.

Hi Reese

Today, Monday 8th, booted up, logged onto my ID, ran Live Update, ccSvcHst.exe running under my ID and System.

Logged onto my wifes ID, got the runtime error (R6025), checked Task Manager ccSvcHst.exe running under my wifes ID, but not under System.

Re-checked my ID ccSvcHst.exe still running under my ID and System.

That's as much info. as I can supply, I'm afraid.

Hi reese

Tuesday, 9th, no problems this morning.

Further to my message of yesterday, it seems to happen when Norton loads.

Thanks for the additional information. I’ve started making some inquiries to find out if anyone else is familiar with this issue.

Thank you.

Hi reese

Booted up this morning (Wednesday 10th), logged on under my ID and immediately got the runtime error R6025.

Both versions of ccSvcHst.exe are running.

Switched user, logged on under my wife's ID, again got the runtime error.

ccSvcHst.exe not running under my wife's ID.

First time it's happened logging on under both ID's, usually happens under one or the other.

I have a suggestion about all this.

AA, when you switch users, do you log off as one user, then log on as the other; or are you using the easy switch that leaves both of you logged on?

My guess would be that you are doing the second option; and that since ccsvchst is running under the first user's SYSTEM that it is not running a second time in the second user's SYSTEM (as far as TaskManager is reporting).  I hope I am making sense with this.

Do you and your wife have the same personal settings for Norton?  If both users are "active" simultaneously, this might be a source of conflict.  Another problem (I am suggesting this to the engineers, not you, AA) might be that one user is in the middle of something like a backup Live Update while switching to the other user; and that the concurrent unfinished activity combined with whatever initializes with the new user might lead to all sorts of system problems.

There, that's my blind guess on all this.  I'm probably not even in the right ballpark, but ...  :smileytongue:

Thanks for the interest mijcar

We switch users whilst the other is logged on.

It only happens after a boot up, i.e. first log on, never happens after that.

No programs are running when we switch user.

We both use the same Norton settings.

Info for reese......if ccSvcHst.exe is not running under the user name, Ms Outlook cannot contact the mail server.

I'd suggest switching to Norton Internet Security 2009. A lot of old issues aren't issues any more.

You can go here (Symantec Store - Trialware) and download the trial version, which is the retail version without your key. When you install it, it will pick up the key to NIS 2008 and become your regular version.

I like the product and will be recommending it to my clients, as well as using it for the rest of my family.

Good luck,
