Issue abstract:
Ever since my system was upgraded to Norton 24 my computer regularly and randomly locks up and has even crashed a few times.
Detailed description:
After the force upgrade to Norton v24 installed, the CPU randomly spikes, my computer freezes, and there is always a Norton service using lots of CPU (according to Process Explorer). This was not an issue with the previous version.
I called and 1st level support said to disable scanning and firewall, but when I told them it didn’t help, they said then it is not Norton. They then transferred me to a different support line, which after a long hold promptly dropped the call.
I know for a fact that it is this Norton release since my system has NO ISSUES and works perfectly when I deinstalled and use Windows Defender. As I said above, I also had no issues with the previous version. This all started after the update to v24. I waited 2 weeks and saw they came out with a patch for v24 and tried reinstalling but the same issue immediately occurred and I had to deinstall again.
I am very disappointed. I have been a Norton product user forever. I even used to be one of their product testers. I renewed my subscription recently (before the upgrade) and cannot even use it.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix or has Norton software “jumped the shark” and I should look for something else or just stick with Windows Defender?
Product & version number:
Norton 360 v24
OS details:
Windows 10 Home - 10.0.19045 Build 19045
You might consider doing what some members of the community did and roll back to the previous version of N360. @SoulAsylum provided great directions. Hopefully Norton will work out the major bugs in v24 before too long. My personal opinion but v24 wasn’t ready for prime time. Uninstall new version (V 24) Norton360 premium and reinstall old version - #4 by SoulAsylum
I rolled back a couple of my computers without major problems. The only hitch was that the license didn’t transfer over on one device but it was an easy fix by signing into my Norton, adding the device, then deleting the old instance of that device from the license list.
@lmf1701 Disable live updates in your current version. DO NOT manually run live updates or Smart Scan as it will install version 24.xx. Use intelligent updater to keep definitions current at this link:
Thank you love. Thanks to you I’m sure we’re all beyond grateful. I do have a question though - once we’ve done all of that, which I have, how do you get to the settings for intelligent updater? How do you know it’s working or what it’s doing? I installed it, twice actually, but I can’t find it as a program or app, so I can’t manage it, see what it’s doing or see if it’s working.
Right now my Nortan 360 v22 has the protection on, VPN on, though the VPN keeps placing me too close to where I actually am, a huge complaint I kept complaining about prior to the God awful V24 was pushed on us (nasty old GUI that was also frying my CPU, fan then some), live update and smart scan is off and I’m not going to run smart scan as you stated, so I have big old red !! on my Nortan telling me my definitions are outdated. That’s why I’m trying to find my Intelligent Updater prog or app to find the settings and make sure it’s doing what it needs to do so I can comfortably ignore the !! from Nortan 360. Words of wisdom Dear @SoulAsylum ?
Look for the current protection status per this screenshot:
Look under “You are Protected” .> Protection Updates. When you have installed the update file from the Intelligent updater site it should state current. Remember. DO NOT run Live Updates or you will get version 24.xx once again.
