Norton 360 24.9.9452 (build 24.9.9452.877) forced upgrade Firewall issues with Microsoft Edge 129.0.2792.65

The forced upgrade to this newest version of this bloatware that I can’t even call a Norton product anymore the “Smart” Firewall causes Edge to take forever to open. The browser just hangs. I do have a lot of tabs open, but that was not the issue with the previous version of Norton.

Steps taken:

  • Delete Edge from the Firewall rules. Switch from Ask to Smart mode. No resolution.
  • Delete Edge from the Firewall rules. Switch from Smart to Ask. The popup appears, allow connections forever. No resolution.
  • Start Edge without extensions. - No resolution.
  • Start Edge from the command line directly in Private mode. No resolution.
  • Disable the “Smart” Firewall - Edge works fine. Enable Firewall after Edge loads manually - Edge hangs again. Disable the Firewall for 10 minutes and let it start itself - Edge works fine.
  • Installed Edge Beta. Clean install, no syncing. Edge still hangs.

I don’t want to reinstall Norton because to this day, we still don’t have the ability to export all the settings and I have a lot of Firewall rules that will take me forever to recreate. I mean, a simple Json file with the settings export/import will do the trick.

Anybody else ran into this issue?

No issue with Edge 129.0.2792.65…my side.
Caveat:
clean v24 install
Automatic Program Control > Smart Mode. No custom rules.
Many Edge switches off.

The problem is with the migration. I don’t like being a beta tester.

Smart mode works for majority of users, but not for me. I like to see what is going on with my system and have granular control over applications.

As far as Edge, pretty much everything is off in terms of switches and additional functionality both via the settings panel and group policy.

I had a forced install of version 24.xx recently which is a bit more nefarious so yeah!! Its not just a browser issue as you are seeing. Its the fact this update was forced in the first place. Even if you remove the latest version, then, download it again from your subscription in your Norton account it fill once again feed you the latest version. I hope, as I do, that you have a former installer to get the version prior to install. I’m still awaiting for Norton to begin the process of telling me how and why my issue happened. Hoping your issues are resolved quickly.

I do have an old version thank god, but without the export settings functionality, it defeats the purpose. I’ve been using Norton for years and doing the initial setup by turning off majority of the bloatware is a pain.

  1. Norton needs an active public beta channel.
  2. I hear ya’. I don’t know (have not tested) whether v24 Troubleshooting > Reset to Default or Repair Norton retains…firewall rules. Norton needs Export settings/rules.
  3. I don’t know. v24 feels okay…my side. Edge feels okay…my side.
  1. Agreed.
  2. Repair retains the rules. Reset to default doesn’t.
  3. You are lucky.
  1. Thanks
  2. Thanks
  3. I don’t know whether clean install will help. After coming to v24 via over install…pulled from my Norton account and after playing with v24 a while. I did v24 clean install…a very clean install.

Having the same issue, my sub runs out in 9 days thank goodness. I have had it with this company.

I’ve been with Norton for, I don’t know how long, and I’m at the point of dumping it for exactly the issues raised in this post.

The Browser Extensions are a cock-up, only Password Manager seems to avoid making browsers malfunction.

The ‘pop-ups’ that I now get trying to sell me addons are ridiculous.

As a non-techy user, I want an anti-virus product that works well, behind the scenes and doesn’t require much user interaction.

For example, Anti-Track screwed up my browsing, this is the answer I got from ‘N’ Support: “Disable Norton AntiTrack for a specific website https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-antitrack/current/solutions/v138744797

It was affecting dozens, I’m not going to do this for every website!

My subscription is up for renewal at the end of the year, has anyone got suggestions for an alternative that meets my requirements?

I trust that Norton is reading these comments?

Pop-ups even stop Print Screen working!

Same problem as mine with all tested PCs
In addition, there is a performance loss and the PC freezes when you send something over the home network… so I’m back to version 22 (22.24.8.36) so everything works as it should again

Is there any resolution for this ?

i have identical behavior - Edge locks up on startup - disable firewall - everything works.
Issue started with free “upgrade” to 360.
no other changes to configuration / software
