I have noticed a recurring problem since updating my version of 360 from version 6 to the current version 20.2.0.19. A couple of weeks after updating to the new version, I got the red X in the Norton icon in the bottom right corner of my screen meaning something needed to be fixed. Windows XP also gave me the little warning saying I had no antivirus protection.
Clicking on the Fix button resulted in "Not Fixed" messages for the antivirus, antispyware functions.
I tried a few things including scanning with Malware Bytes and the Norton Power Eraser. Both detected no threats. This appears to be a 360 installation problem. I uninstalled 360 using the uninstall tool from the start menu, then resinstalled by downloading the 360 installer. That didn't remedy the problem.
I uninstalled again and installed from the disk. This time when the install was completed, eveything was working.
But a week or so later, the security features of 360 spontaneously stopped working again.
This time, 360 detected an error on its own (I did not write down the number, sorry), opened my browser to the Norton support site, gave me a message saying there was an installation problem, and gave me instructions for downloading and running the Norton Uninstall and Reinstall tool. I followed the instructions and 360 is once again installed and working.
Whether it will continue to work or not, I don't know. I just ran the Autofix tool from within 360 and it detected no issues.
If this is something that other users are experiencing, I think it may be a bug which should be brought to Symantec's attention. As I said earlier, it doesn't seem to be caused by an infection, but by an inability by the latest version of 360 to properly install on my Windows XP Pro computer.
This has been reported before in the forums. The 'fix' has been to reinstall the product, which you have already done.
Keep an eye on things to see if they continue to work correctly. If not, you may have to do a more thorough uninstall before reinstalling. We can talk you through that if the need arises.
I thought all was well this time, but this morning, auto-protect, SONAR, and antispyware protection are turned off.
Clicking on Fix Now does not remedy the problem.
Looks like you need the more thorough uninstall of the product before reinstalling. This time you need to use the Norton Removal tool. Your previous uninstalls may have left remnants behind that are confusing your product.
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here www.norton.com/nrt If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility. Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel. Reboot. Run the Norton Removal Tool. Reboot. Log into your Norton Account from here www.account.norton.com Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product. Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available. Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.
