Norton 360 automatic updates

Hi,

I wonder about options I have to manage updates. At the end I want to be able to schedule updates to run when I want. If not, then to run them manually.

I know there are two parties involved: Pulse Updates and LiveUpdates. I'm not sure how they work together, nor what settings are available.

Thanks

Hi,

Pulse Updates are not different update method compared to Live Update, it is simply a part of the Live Update process, they are really rapid and little virus definition files.

If you run Live Update, you will get Pulse Updates, Virus Definition, Web Protection and other definition files.

By default, Live Update is set to run automatically, that means that the program checks for the updates every 2-3 minutes, and in a day whole downloaded data can be around 50MB (or a bit more). If you use fast internet connection (like DSLs) you should not change it, as with this setting you will get the best protection.

But if you use modem (slow) internet connection, you can change Live Update to manual in the Setting -> Task Scheduling ->Scheduling tab. But this way you have to do the update every day minimum once!

Let us know the results.

PapuaZ thx for clear description.  Does 360 automatically delete some of the update history periodically? 50mb per day is not alot but over time it adds up.  Is there a simple way to see what version of virus definitions is being used?

Hi,

the only thing you can check is the date of the virus definition. On the main window (by the counter when last update was done), or here: C:\ProgramData\Norton\{various_numbers}\N360_4.1.0.32\Definitions\VirusDefs\20101009.002 (this is on Win7/Vista, on XP it's in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Local Settings\Norton\{various_numbers}\N360_4.1.0.32\Definitions\VirusDefs\20101009.002).
