Norton 360 being blocked?

My computer has been running slow for a while and keeps freezing so we were trying to fix it but now we are unable to open Norton 360 in normal mode, we were able to do a scan in safe mode but it won't even open in normal mode.  Also in normal mode instead of check mark on the symbol it has like a minus sign or slash.

Norton was working fine before I did an update to it...... I do have Spyware Doctor but I have had that for two years alongside Norton and have never had these issues.  However I do think that my computer is infected because it was running slow and continuously freezing before I even updated Norton, that's actually why I updated it I thought it might help.  I also bought Registry Easy but have since uninstalled that as it didn't help the situation.  I also tried uninstalling Norton and reinstalling but it didn't seem to make a difference.

OK, next step then is to download and run a tool that is more tailored to removing malware than preventing it. Try downloading the Norton Power Eraser to your desktop, then rebooting into Safe Mode (with network support) to run it.  Run it with rootkit detection enabled, and say yes to submit anything suspicious to Symantec/Norton for remote analysis.

I wouldn't remove anything that isn't positively identified as a known threat: NPE scans aggressively and has a chance of picking up "false positives" that you might not want it to nuke. Let us know what--if anything--it finds: there are further steps we can take, either here or on some other recommended forums that specialize in one-on-one malware removal.

Nothing came up under suspiscious but risks were detected, I haven't said to fix them yet since you had said it could come up with false positives, the following came up

Risk                              File Type                          Local Scan

Hxwd.sys                     File                                    Bad

klmd.sys                      File                                    Bad

SYMEFA.sys                File                                    Bad

SYMEFA.sys                File                                    Bad

SymIMv.sys                  File                                    Bad

download                     System settings              Bad

OK--so you have been visited by some nasties. I am not a malware expert, so I'm hesitant to advise you from here. To me, it looks like it's taken up residence in some of your Norton 360 files...meaning if you tell NPE to clean house, you will likely--at the least--have to remove and reinstall Norton 360.

Let me page Quads--our malware Ace on these forums--and see if he's available to give your report a look and render a verdict on whether it's safe for you to clean it out with NPE, or whether a more deliberate process under expert guidance is in order.

Risk                              File Type                          Local Scan

Hxwd.sys                     File                                    Bad                   Have No idea

klmd.sys                      File                                    Bad                   For Kaspersky Products including TDSSkiller, but one infection type could use it (newbie)

SYMEFA.sys                File                                    Bad                  Norton

SYMEFA.sys                File                                    Bad                  Norton

SymIMv.sys                  File                                    Bad                 Norton

download                     System settings              Bad                Not enough info

Having more than one realtime product installed is not a good Idea, whether it's Norton, Spybot S&D, and Spyware Doctor.

Quads

Well I removed those and then uninstalled Spyware Doctor and reinstalled Norton and Norton seems to be up and running again in Normal Mode, Thank you both for your help.

Excellent! Always glad to hear a positive outcome.

Have a great weekend!
