Norton 360 blocks ALL internet connection unless I use VPN or connect via wireless

Issue abstract: No ethernet internet access - only connects via wireless or ethernet + VPN

Detailed description: Not a 100% all the time problem, but occasionally Norton 360 blocks all of my internet access via ethernet. The only way I can connect is to turn on my Nord VPN or connect wirelessly. The only way I can cure this is to reset firewall rules and “repair” norton. Most of the time this works.

Product & version number: 24.11.9615 (build 24.11.9615.891 (AV)

OS details:Windows 11 home

What is the error message you are seeing? No error messages, just no internet access
If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

Hello Kurt. Reset your Norton firewall and retest. FYI!! Since you already have the VPN that comes with Norton 360 you should NOT have a second VPN installed. Doing so creates conflicts in the OS. Temporarily remove NordVPN and recheck for your issue persisting.

When you’re right, you’re right. SoulAsylum, you are right. I uninstalled Nord VPN and so far no issues at all. Thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it.

I spoke too soon. It worked fine for about a day then today (Saturday) it started blocking my internet access again. I finally had to completely uninstall Norton 360 so I could access the internet. I really like Norton 360, but without internet it’s useless to me. Any thoughts?

@Kurt_Hockstedler From the run command type in services.msc and press enter. Find the Norton VPN service in the list, they are listed in alphabetic order. Right click and open properties. Set the startup type to “manual”. Save the settings and reboot. Restest and please let us know your results. Use my screenshot as a guide.

we should not have to go through this heavy handed Firewall settings, Norton360 was not meant to be such a heavy VPN, it is mission creep and bloatware. Default should be ‘OFF’ when included. IMHO. My computer was running good until this started taking over my computer. Now everdy it stops my Internet access. Only way to get my access back is to reboot.

OOTB the VPN should NOT be set to run automatically in services, agreed!! It unfortunately has reenabled itself in the past even with the VPN set to OFF in the UI at the next system boot. Setting the VPN as I have prevents the VPN from tampering with your internet speeds, tested my side this works. The issue was present in version 24.xx and is now the case with version 25. Nothing we can suggest here other than what is posted due to we Guru’s do not have access to the dev teams directly.

bad enough for people who know computers. people that do not will be having huge issues and spent lots of money and beg for help… it’s a CRIME! after decades of using and sticking up for Norton, next go round, I might dump Norton, I cannot leave my family with software that will cause them GREIF!
