As soon as I try to open the internet a page opens with the message that my wireless internet entrance is blocked. It is advised to check my firewall and /or antivirus software. As soon as I switch off Norton Inteligent firewall and auto protect the inter works again. The page advice to add Edge to the exceptions in Norton. However, I cannot find how I add Edge to the exceptions in Norton. The Norton help pages do not give the answer. Can somebody tell me how I can end this creasy blocking by Norton, so I will have internet on my Windows 10 laptop again.
Hello @JCJvan_t_Hoff
I may have recently experience similar…before you add “Edge to the exceptions in Norton”.
Please try Smart Firewall → General → Restore default settings → Restore
Please try Smart Firewall → Program Control → More → Restore to default
----------------------------------------
Then if no joy…
Please try…as test…turning off…Enhance your security on the web
edge://settings/privacy/security
fwiw ~ as I recall…my Edge was recently sorted via:
Enhance your security on the web = off…cycling Edge…test calling a few websites…then…Enhance your security on the web = on with Balanced (Recommended)…cycling Edge…then…test calling a few websites.
-------------------------------------------------
Note:
my Edge continues to work okay with Smart Firewall → Program Control → More → Restore to default
------------------------------------------
~ hoping, you will not need to add “Edge to the exceptions in Norton”
Smart Firewall → Program Control → More → Allow new app
----------------------------------------------------
Please post your progress.
Caveat: Edge is not my daily rider and I run Edge with several Edge settings disabled.
Hello @JCJvan_t_Hoff
Please post your progress.
All the work arounds are a dog’s breath, only to be broken again with the next update, so why bother? Norton should be correcting the issue vice allowing it to fester, that isn’t happening. Its being left up to the consumer to test the software that is coming out vice its creator. Below is an example of what I am saying:
- Why on God’s earth does Norton installer need TWO separate rules in program control and nether are set to be reported in Security History? There are 4 separate instances of these rules changing just since booting this morning. I mean this is beyond a WTH moment for me. Blocking browsers to me says Norton isn’t testing their stuff or, its intentional and no transparency about why given.
SA
I cannot update because the update goes to the internet and the internet browser is the problem I get an error codes download failed. Every Norton link that opens internet blocks. Norton blocks it self as dangerous site ![]()
So your opening post issue is with Edge? and you’ve excluded Edge?
And you changed your default browser…as test?
What Norton 360 → Troubleshooting have you tried?
add edge to the exceptions in the firewall, reset the firewall. Norton is automatically added in exceptions. Set Edge advance web security to balanced + all the above on this community page. Except the update. Because norton 360 security blocks its own update site
And you changed your default browser…as test?
What Norton 360 → Troubleshooting have you tried?
Yes
What Norton 360 → Troubleshooting have you tried?
what do you mean with Norton troubleshooting?
fwiw ~ my boilerplate:
----------------------------
Please run Norton LiveUpdate + Restart (not Shut down) machine.
If your Norton is not working as expected and you’ve tried Troubleshooting → Reset to Default &or Repair Norton & clean re-install Norton 360…then…reach out to Norton support.
Note: Reset to Default resets Cloud Backup
Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here
fwiw ~ my preference is Remove only…with scour File Explorer/Registry for remnants. Just me.
------------------------
Maybe, try Troubleshooting → Record a performance issue &or Enable/Send debug logs
---------------------------------------Please review: How-To Contact Norton Support
Please post your progress.
I think it the trouble shoot “reset to default” worked, because afterwards Norton did execute the update and my default browser opens my default search page without an error code
Thanks for helping.
But still, I wil be happy and will throw a party as soon as my license expires.
Calling the helpdesk in the Netherland is useless. They have a checklist in front of them and if that does not bring the solution, or if your problem is not captured in their list, they are helpless like a starting IT user.
On top of that the manual / helpfile did answer to the new Norton 360 interface and also their helpdesk did not know their way around the new set up, or knew when the manual / helpfile would be updated.
Norton’s aggressive promotion is also a reason. Their constant promotions to renew your subscription is annoying and irritates.
Another trick they constantly use is to advise a scan in order the solve existing problems or for safety, each time ending in dozens of warnings. Unfortunately, each of them cannot be solved with your Norton subscription. You just have to add a few other Norton modules, and all your problem will be gone. If you honor all those scans your anti-virus will bring you to an antivirus / malware program that wil cost you hundreds a year for a private user with 1 - 3 laptops and/ or desktops.
Do they realise that they tell you in that way that their software Norton 360 is unsafe?
They keep throwing the scan warnings. You have to honor them because your own program is included in the scan + a few you accidently have to buy to solve the rest of the dangerous problems they did find for you,

This way of marketing is aggressive and irritating and a big reason to change to another antivirus / malware software developer.
I ope they will read this and fire their marketeers
Thanks for sharing your progress.

Maybe, disable Norton 360 - Performance features.
fwiw ~ I run Performance features disabled
fwiw ~ I opt Smart Scan = Run manually
------------------------------------------------------
Smart Scan promotional offers is long time known user complaint.
FAQ: Smart Scan here
Maybe, try Smart Scan at Run manually and do not call Smart Scan
