Then, I suggest that you check & clean PUPs using Revo and/or MBAM > update your N360P & disable fast startup> re-scan your Win 10 in Safe Mode.
Plz post back if Revo/MBMA finds sth or, your Norton detects sth. Well, you do not need to worry much if your Norton gives a Green check or tells you that "Your Are Protected".

That is next to nearly impossible. Even a malware or ransomware infection will not cause that. Are you running any other security alongside Norton? Do you run any sort of Tune Up Utility? Registry cleaner? Uninstaller? Are you running the latest version of Norton?

Not as far as I know. My windows 10 was the July 2015 upgrade (I had 8.1 previously).
The Norton folder disappeared along with the Desktop shortcut, the Start menu shortcut and from the Programs and Features list.
Are you using a preview build of Windows 10? If so this would explain the issue. Are you speaking that your shortcut disappeared? Or was Norton completely and totally uninstalled from your pc? Did you see it still listed under programs?
I should have added that Norton Product Tamper Protection was enabled.
Thanks for the comments but I had already reinstalled Norton 360 and restarted Windows 10 and it is apparently working as it should. I assumed it was not Windows Defender that made N360 disappear but "something" did.
My concern was that it should be possible for N360 to disappear leaving my PC unprotected.
I don't know how long my PC was unprotected before Windows Defender filled the gap.

If you have trouble using said Norton Remove and Reinstall tool above, you run Norton Removal Tool > disable fast startup > choose the official download@ norton.com/latestn360p that works for your current Norton 360 subscription, or re-download your N360 Premium through your account.
Moreover, Windows Defender just can't make your N360 disappear, just saying. Plz head to the following KB if you're new to Norton Product Tamper Protection.

Hi, Ignatius. Have you done a full restart which is required in Win 10, for Norton and other programs to correctly update.

If that doesn't fix the problem, try a reinstall which will give you a fresh copy. http://www.norton.com/nrnr
If used, please read the Before you begin note and run Live Update after until no more are found, and then restart your machine.
