Norton 360 Error, 8506, 421 on Windows XP

Hello Folks.

This error message showed up recently in my PC.

I had a previous version of Norton 360 and after a license renewal I found that the Norton system information was displaying to me less months than it was supposed to left for a new renewal.

I called Norton and a new install done by Norton Support Tech person over the remote access was done!

Few months later, I realized that my internet connection was starting to hanging down.

I decided to format my PC, reinstall all Windows XP and SP´s and all application software, Norton as well and my data on June 03.

The internet connection and response time improved. PC was faster. Things were going OK.

I did recently all the necessary checks from Norton Diagnostics features on the Norton 360 application, by June 17th. AAccording to the diagnostics file my Norton Version is 20.3.1.22 .

But recently this error 8506,421 message show up, and as if the PC had fixed itself , the message disappeared.

Today this error message showed again, but the message hangs up and I cannot either open the Norton.

Lets see what the Techies will suggest..?

It  will sucks to follow procedures to install NPE, run, Reinstall Norton 360  and  be ok for a few weeks or months before we migrate to another supplier of Firewall/Anti-Virus,etc

Before seen this e-mail I have run NPE to find if there were warms/virus  in my desktop PC.

downloaded and waited for Norton Power Eraser check for download if available.

Clicked on Scan for Risks option and included Rootkit scan and then restarted the Windows.

After it completed the scan I got : ""No Risks Found, Norton Power Eraser did not detect any risks on your computer".

I thought well :smileyhappy:, however I decided to to a smiliar thing in SAFE MODE, and I did SCAN using the scantools from Norton 360 going froM START, PROGRAM, Norton 360,etc.

However, the final resulta was positive. On the other hand ,  after PC booting, a new issue.

A message :mansurprised:

WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR
CORRUPT.....

<WINDOWS ROOT> \SYSTEM32\HAL.DLL

Install new copy of the file above.

Everytime I booted the Windows, I have got this message above  ! !

Well, to let you all know  I am :smileyfrustrated: very frustrated with Norton/Windows or who ever could be !

I have ran a HardDrive Diagnostics tool from my Dell PC , using F12 pressed during the boot ; and there were no hardware issues identified on the drive. So, indeed is a software issue.

Questions to Norton Second Level Support or  kind Community members :

What should I be by next actions to solve this matter? .

Questions for NORTON:

Is Norton really ahead and up to speed at preventing customers from cathing up Virus/Worms?

Are all Windows network doors really safe and being closed accordingly upon installing Norton to prevent us from internet hackers/warms,/virus/etc?

Regards,

Eduardo

Even though you checked the hard drive with the Dell diagnostics, you still need to use the Windows chkdsk that will update the Windows record of bad sectors.

Were you able to replace the hal.dll? If the file was corrupt, that could indicate the bad hard drive sector I mention above.

If you can still boot into Safe Mode try running System File Checker.

Click on Start and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click on Run as Administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check your Windows installation and try to correct any errors it finds.

I can start in SAFE MODE, however the Windows boot show the same message above " hal.dll…" as described earlier.

Last Friday I called Norton 0800 support team very ealier in the morning.

The person at other end of phone who answered me asked few questions to understand the problem and when it happen.

He quickly asked my contact number as he would escalate the issue to a second tier level support personnel.

As I had no call back from them I called again the 0800 and provided them my troubleticket number and told the reason for my follow up about the matter.

Whe first level support guy verified my login e-mail address and ticked number he asked me to wait for a moment .

Upon return, he kindly recommended me to call Microsoft to solve my problem…

…Ping-Pong…

The hal.dll is a Windows component so it would not be something for Norton to fix.

If you have a Windows DVD, put it into your computer and restart. Be sure your boot options are set to boot from CD/DVD. Choose the option to Repair your Windows installation. I have not done this for a long time, so you may have to look around for that option.

This Repair should check and replace any corrupt files including hal.dll. You should not lose any programs or files with this option.

Another fix for the Hal.dll error with XP and the user has Safe Mode

Quads

Thanks.

I choose to format and reinstall Windows. I loose some data as I had not had earler back ups. Live and learn. Windows installed as well as Norton.

On another computer where I have had done a clean install, was interesting to realize I still received few error messages like per example "Norton 360 Error:  8504,104 ".

Am I supposed to be happy.....?
