Welcome

It almost sounds like you installed the program from a CD and a few pieces didn't get copied to your hard drive before it appeared to be finished and you removed the disk. If this isn't the case then I'm not sure what's happening. More information on how you did your install would help.

Have you put the CD back into the reader so that the program can find it? If so, what happened?

Is this a laptop? Do you have the Internet connected before you boot the computer?

Yes, I'm fishing trying to come up with all the possible errors I've caused myself and how I finally solved the problem.

One solution would be to use the Norton Removal Tool and elminiate the program from your system, reboot, then reinstall it and bring it up to date.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your response. I have not recently installed this program. It’s been on this computer for a couple of years. Updates are done via Internet when available. It is a desk top. I believe the most recent update was a week or so ago - a message comes up when there are updates as part of my subscription.

Yes, Internet is connected during boot up.

The picture becomes a bit clearer.

I'm going to guess that this isn't the current version of 360 - you really need to update it.

The 'when available' part bothers me. 360 looks at its server rather regularly to see if there's anything new it needs to download. Updates to devinitions and the pulse updates come in much more often that every week or so.

The 'as part of my subscription' leads me to think that this isn't a direct from Norton copy of 360. This too may be part of the problem. Keep talking to me, we will get this solved :smileywink:

Also, I noticed this same issue was posted in December 2009. There were 2 replies asking for more info but that was it - no solution.

Everything seems to work fine once I clear the screen but that’s not the point. I wish the error message had a number or gave more information.

Thanks for any help.

This is directly from Norton. I renew a 3 license subscription yearly. During the year if there are any program updates I get a Symantec pop-up and update the program. The virus updates/ definitions happen automatically every day or so (whenever they’re released). Everything is as up to date as what is available.

Hi Cabot2011,

Check in Windows Add/Remove Programs.  Do you find a program called Norton Security Scan?  If so, it may be causing this issue.  DivX and Shockwave are two programs that are known to bundle NSS with their downloads, so you may have inadvertently installed it along with one of them at some point.  If you find Norton Security Scan in the list you can remove it.

Good, real Norton :)

Now was this version installed on a clean system or was it installed as an upgrade/update to an existing version on your system?

For various reasons changing versions without removing the old version can upset the works a bit.

Try this; use the Norton Removal Tool and clear out everything Norton, reboot and then install 360 again. Run LU until all of the updates are  installed - may take three times. I think that should solve the problem, at least I hope it does

Hi

I don’t have that listed. Only Norton 360 Premium.

It wasn’t a completely new version as far as I can tell. It was a pop-up that I get about once a year I’d say, which says there’s been an upgrade that you’re entitled to since you’re in the middle of your license.

It doesn’t seem to install a new program. When Norton installs a new program, it’s a big rigamarole and they tell you to uninstall the old version.

I can give it a try tomorrow – I just wish that since this is a Norton message (relating to a disconnected CD drive, which isn’t disconnected) that there would be a “known” reason for this issue. I know I’m not the first to have this happen. I suppose something is probably corrupted somewhere.

Thanks for your help with this.
