Norton 360 Failing To Start

Hello,

I need some expert help on this one.  I have Norton 360 running on a Windows 7 operating system since October, 2011.  For the last several weeks, I have found that Norton 360 will not start when I boot up my PC.  Here's the scenario.  I turn on my PC and boot things up, Norton 360 does not start, I download NRT and run it to remove 360, I download the latest version of 360 from my user account and run it to reinstall the product.  360 installs just fine, I run Liveupdate, and I'm good for the day. A couple of days later, the problem reoccurs and I perform the deinstall/reinstall again to get it working.  This happened on January 10, 24, and again today.  I've also called the Norton phone support number on January 22 and 28.  During both of these calls, the Norton tech does the deinstall/reinstall while I watch and the product works again for a couple of days before the problem reoccurs.

My question is this - is it possible to get a Norton tech with the expertise to actually fix the problem rather than just do the deinstall/reinstall and have it go bad again after a couple of days?

Hi Guru,

A wild guess to start with - check your date and time on your system clock.  The date and time on the lower right of the screen are correct.

Do you uninstall N 360 prior to runing the NRT, or just run the NRT?  I just ran NRT and then reinstalled for this morning's problem.  Prior to this, I used the Control Panel uninstall before reinstalling.  I've not done both, though.

Please open N 360 and from the main page click on Settings > About and tel lus which version of N 360 you are running and also if it is the standard or the premiere edition.  Norton 360 Premiere Edition, Version 20.2.1.22

Have you tried to click on Support > Get Support and see what it finds/corrects?  I did this and it "successfully fixed 1 item" - Under the "Repair" title it listed "Installation" and under the "Result" title it listed "Success".

Have you tried to open N 360 via the System tray Icon or the a Desktop Shortcut Icon when it does not start on boot up?  Yes - and both did not get it started.

Perhaps if it happens again, you can try Get Support, or maybe run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool in lieu of using the NRT.

Thanks for the feedback.

The Get Support that you ran - was that just done - or done in the past and "fixed install" was the response?  Did it in fact fix it - only for it to fail again at some point afterwards?

Since it seems to be intermittent, I'm not sure if the following is called for or not.  It won't hurt to try it though.

Please open Run by pressing windows key + R -> devmgmt.msc -> View Show Hidden devices -> open Non-Plug and Play Drivers-> Maximize the Screen

If you have a identity safe data back it up ->

Go to Control panel uninstall norton 360->select the second option to

completely uninstall ->restart -> Run Norton Removal Tool -> Restart ->

On the maximized screen page -> if you find   NAVENG, NAVEX15, Norton Antivirus settings manager, starting from Symantec Data Store to SymEvent (entries starting with Sym)  ->right click on them

click uninstall -> For the Restart prompts select no -> Goto Program files

if you find Norton Folder delete it -> Goto Run ->type temp ->Delete all

the files in there -> Run -> %temp% ->delete all ->Now Restart the PC -

>Install Norton 360 Premiere ->Run Live Update until you get no updates found

message ->restart PC

Let us know how it went for you and reply if you had any difficulties

Guru,

The Get Support was done for the first time, today, after I read your post and not before.

I'll execute your deinstall/reinstall instructions if it fails again in a couple of days, however, the script follows closely what the last Norton tech performed a couple of days ago when I called in.  I watched as he uninstalled the NAVENG, NAVEX15, etc, deleted the Norton Folder and %temp% files, deinstalled/reinstalled.....

I'll post back in a couple of days and let you know if it's still working.

Thank you!

Thanks for the addtional information - if the Tech already did that, then there is no sense in trying it again.

Yes, please let us now if all ius still working.  Also, perhaps the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool's useage with a reoccurance may make things quicker.

Guru,

Norton 360 stopped working on January 31 again, so, I followed your deinstall/reinstall instructions, that you posted above, to the letter and have not had any problems since that time!  Thanks for your your help and (knock on wood) you can consider this problem closed.

Thanaks for letting us know - hopefully it stays sorted.
