I have windows 10 and Norton 360. When windows tried to do the auto install for the new cumulative 1511 10586, my screen would just hang upon reboot. Desktop was frozen with the "thinking circle" at my cursor. Nothing was responsive. I let it run for hours thinking it may resolve. It never did. I could not break out of it to even shutdown my desktop. I ended up having to force down the machine with the 8 second power button hold. Upon restart, it was right back into the unresponsive desktop.
I restored back to an earlier save and tada, issue resolved. Then 10586 would download again and on the next restart, unresponsive desktop. I tried this several times.
Next I started into safe mode and started uninstalling software one at a time. I would then go through the patching process again and reboot. Nothing worked until I got to Norton. When I uninstalled Norton 360, everything worked. Patch ran, cumulative applied, system restarted and all was good in the world.
I went to the Norton site to re-download the latest version of Norton 360, post 10586 cumulative patch. Got the software downloaded, ran my updates, ran a complete scan, set up the performance and backup options and rebooted. Desktop locked and unresponsive. so...I booted to safemode again, un-installed Norton 360 and all is good in the world with Windows 10. I'm currently running Windows defender and Malwarebytes in place of my Norton.
If someone has a resolution for this, I would greatly appreciate knowing what it is.
