Thanks for the quick response. You mentioned running the NRT for each product installed, I believe I only ran it for the 2007 product as this was my version of NIS though it had been updated to the latest 2008 veersion via download from Norton website.  I did this because when the NRT is run it says that it removes the whole list of norton products that included NIS, NSW, NSR. Is this in fact so, that everything norton is removed?  I thought I would run the NRT for NIS 2007, NIS 2008, NSW 2006B and NSR but when I see that it says it will remove everything including N360, which I don’t want to remove, I am wary of trying it.  Based on what you said I thought there might be some residual stuff from the old programs that might be messing up my updates.

Good question. Short answer - I dont know. Long answer - I take no chances, so I cover myself by making it clear that the NRT selected should be appropriate to the product.

The link here shows that the directions for Norton 360  is different to say Norton  2008 or Norton 2007. So rather than just say download or apply the NRT executable , it is always better to refer to the right NRT document, that way there is a chance the user will be aware of all the instructions and not just apply an NRT (which they may have previously downloaded).

Nevertheless, the actual NRT executable is stated to be the same for all 2008 through 2003 products and Norton 360.

Having said that the NRT for Win ME/98 systems is different to the version for Vista/XP/2000.

It is too late now to run the NRT unless you are intending to uninstall Norton 360 and reinstall.

Instead follow the link previously provided . If you need to uninstall and reinstall then someone will say so, I'm sure. Lets try to avoid that if possible.

I keep getting pop-up notices from the tray that new updates are available. When I run the live update program I get updates to everything but the "Norton Product Update" sub-category of "Symantec Shared Components", with error msg LU1812. I can't tell what isn't updating and whether or not it is a serious matter.

I am running Windows XP with SP3, Norton 360 V2.3.1.4, Add-On Pak V2.1.0.55, and Norton Save and Restore V1.0.016.  Before I installed N360 I was running NIS 2007, NSW 2006, and NS&R.  I uninstalled all the old Norton products, ran the Norton Removal tool, installed N360 and updated, then reinstalled NS&R.

I have run LUALL but this didn't fix the problem, also, the list of products doesn't show NS&R as being on the system and available for update.  When I run live update from N360 it runs a different looking program than when I run live update from NS&R which looks exactly like the program LUALL runs.

My thoughts are that the update that fails is related to NS&R but it is an 86KB file which may relate to more than I am thinking.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated as I don't want to leave myself open to a future firewall or virus problem.

First off, well done. Maybe you read some of the threads before posting, I dont know. But you have given us for the moment all the information we need.

Before I forget, when you sort out this problem of yours, I suggest you apply the zombie workaround because you are on WinXP.

I'll get you the link later. Do not worry for the moment as this is not your current problem, but it should be done.

I hope you ran the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) that was appropriate to each of the Symantec products. They are different.

Start by going to this link message 2. Run the first link. I know it is LU9000 but its a different updater and worth trying.

You will see also my suiggestion about turing off sym tamper protection, until you resolve this. Re-run luall with it off.

if all that fails, you should post here to jgreen, who will send you a private message with an experimental workaround
