Since I installed Norton 360 my computer stays on. Until now, XP has gone into hibernate to save energy. Most electronic items, from toasters to TV's have become more energy conscious. Has Norton actually designed this product to waste energy?
How can I restore my computers energy saving mode? I have tried to disable background scans and turned off silent mode. I turn off my DSL modem when not on the web, but Norton still prevents hibernate.
Let us know the version of Norton 360 you use(Help & Support > About). Run LiveUpdate repeatedly until you get all the available updates, restart the computer and run a Comprehensive Scan. Then check this problem again.
I just installed Norton 360 v4 after running the Norton Removal tool. I ran Liveupdate, rebooted and ran the comprehensive scan. It found four tracking cookies, which I removed. I rebooted and set XP hibernate to 1 hour. It's two hours later, and my computer won't hibernate. As I said earler, this energy saving modality worked flawlessly until I installed Norton 360 v4.
I think there are background processes Norton is running that prevent hibernation. How do I toggle them off? Silent mode is already off.
Silent mode is entirely different from the Background scan that runs when your computer is idle. When you perform important tasks on your computer, you likely would prefer not to receive any alert messages. Silent Mode suppresses alerts and notifications and temporarily suspends most of the background activities. If Norton program detects a security threat when Silent Mode is enabled, it does not display the alert but takes appropriate action to protect your computer. You can either turn on the silent mode manually or otherwise enable the full screen detection which will enable the silent mode whenever any application opens in the fullscreen mode.
You can also turn off the Automatic LiveUpdate and Pulse Updates. Then change the Task Scheduling to Manual.Check the results.
I have already set Task Scheduling to manual. It sounds like the Background Scans when my computer is idle are preventing my machine from hibernating. How can I stop background activities?
Have you checked the Norton Tasks window to see if there is a Background Job running during Idle time? As you've just installed the product, it's likely to be the case.
Do any of the 'Background Jobs listed in the Norton Tasks window show a status of 'Cancelled'? In particular, look for the status on the 'Idle Full System Scan' and 'Insight Optimizer' (disk defragmenter). If these tasks are showing a status of 'Cancelled', you can run them manually by pressing the 'Play' button next to each job. These jobs will keep running during Idle time until they complete, so force them to complete and report back if you still have an issue with hibernation.
I think I found a solution to my problem when I read your Idle Time info! I set Idle Time Optimizer OFF and Silent Mode ON for 6 hours at the end of my computing day. When I woke this morning, I found my computer asleep! I'll try with Idle Time ON today. It may just need the Silent Mode set to 6 hours to let my system hibernate.
I found one weird thing -- when I powered up my system, Silent Mode was set to OFF. Does Norton force this off automatically?
